Wow, I must say I wasn’t expecting a XXX version of sarsaparilla, but that’s what I got. There a little chocolate, coffee and toast in the aroma, but it’s really all about the aniseed which overpowers the other flavours. Similarly there’s loads of aniseed in the mouth, which gives way to a suprisingly hoppy finish sitting in the middle of the tongue. Its texture is very oily, so much so that I wondered if I was going to blow a bubble if I coughed.

Bottled. A dark red beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of caramel, alcohol, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of over ripe fruits, metal, malt, and roasted malt, leading to a dry roasted finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of maneliquor. Pours a clear reddish brown with a lacing and creamy beige head. Sweet roasty, licoricey nose. Medium body, sweet roast, again licorice and quite some phenols. No real bitterness. 030612

Pours black with a large, lasting light tan head.Nose is rich with lots of milk chocolate, cocoa and softer roasted coffee. Very soft and cream, no aggressive roasted malt. Very nice.Flavours follow along the same lines, complex with no harsh roasted notes. Plenty more cocoa and soft coffee with some distinctive oatmeal lingering in there too. The main problem is some faint burnt notes.Body is suitably thick. Carbonation is somewhat higher than I would have liked.

Bottle. Very dark reddish brown with a medium light tan head. Interesting aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, oats and coconut. Something herbal too - fennel? Taste has cocoa, coffee, dessicated coconut and full but not very deep roasted malt. Bitter finish has roast, coffee and grass. Medium-bodied - doesn’t really have that oatmeal lusciousness. Sweeter as it warms. [3.5] This one’s got _much_ more of what I thought was fennel, and now it’s clearly star anise. Perhaps slightly to the detriment of the other flavours, but it’s prickly and it’s in synch. Interesting and unusual.
