Launched at the Free Trade Inn, Newcastle on 6th September. Diabolus is a soured Temptation. This 10% abv Russian Stout is crossed with a Belgian Gueuze. The result is being hailed as a new beer style which combines the tart acidity of gueuze with the full roast body of Imperial Stout.

Bottle courtesy of the marvellous Peter Fowler, landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton, Wantage, Oxon, cheers Peter. Consumed at Bromyard Folk Festival Bar, Herefordshire Saturday 14th September 2013 Pours brown, but very, very dark brown with a large tan head. The aroma is just like a lambic, very strange when you look at it, but it is a great typically funky nose. Initially this is very sour but then some vanilla, coffee, and wonderful roasty flavours come through. So this is both sour & fruity yet also roasty & chocolatey (with coffee) very good most unusual beer. A8 A4 T7 P4 Ov16 4.0

Bottle. Pours a dark brown ruby color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity sour tart weak roasted caramel aroma. Fruity sour tart caramel and chocolate flavor. Has a fruity sour tart caramel finish.

Bottle at home, from Cotteridge Wines, 20/07/13. Mid black with a thin tan head that dissipates to a central pond and edgeing. Nose is dark fruits, light chocolate, tarte and sour berry fruits, dark fruit sour mash. Taste comprises roast malt, soured dark berry fruits, bretts, funky, earthy, dank wood, cocoa. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, surprisingly drinkable for 10%. Overall - great stuff, something different from a UK brewer, wish more would play around with stouts like this (intenionally I must add!!!).

33 cL bottle. Pours hazy dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity, wineous and roasted dark malty. Fruity, tart, metallic, overripe fruits and wineous. Light chemical. Bitter and sourish finish.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours black with a tint of red and a creamy, beige head. Tart aroma atop some roastiness. Medium body, roast and tobacco but the sourness really dominates, a lactic sourness with quite some dark, dried fruits. Very sour actually - but somehow it works. 120713

Bottle from The Trembling Madness Drinks Shop in York. Pours dark brown with a light tan smear. Aroma is sort of sourish coffee. There is a gueuze type smell. Med body. Flavor is coffee/chocolate/sour - definitely some gueuze aspect. It goes malty, then gueuze. Different, but it works.

330ml bottle. Black colour with small, reawakening, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Sourish aroma has herbal vinegar notes, hints of "Sauerfleisch", sauerkraut, laurel. Taste is initially sourish with a sweet balsamic vinegar touch, some relic malt sugar sweetness, later just dry and sour, hints of roasty dark malt flashing up in the finish. No, I’m still not into this sourish stuff.

330ml bottle from the Cheese & Wine Shop, Darlington. Dark ruby black colour, foamy beige head which diminishes leaving some lacing and aroma of roast malt, coffee, chocolate, leather, with a sour fruity slight barnyard edge. Taste is an up-front tangy berry fruit sourness intermingled with coffee and chocolate, and a sweet apple cider like note. Medium bodied, high to medium carbonation, slightly oily mouth feel and light bitterness through to a dry finish. Very drinkable indeed.

(bottle, 33cl) Black colour with a beige and short foamy layer. Lots of Gueuze/Lambic smell, instead of the expected dark and roasted malt-character, except for some little roasted malt and leather. Moderately sour flavour, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Present Lambic-character with hints of roasted malt, chocolate and Barnyard/Brett notes; moderately sour and bitter-tart finish with a lingering apple-fruity aftertaste. Bottle at Deanso’s crappy music tasting. The aroma is big and zesty. The flavour is hugely sour and that’s what dominates. Not what I was expecting but I’m not disappointed.
