Launched at the Free Trade Inn, Newcastle on 6th September. Diabolus is a soured Temptation. This 10% abv Russian Stout is crossed with a Belgian Gueuze. The result is being hailed as a new beer style which combines the tart acidity of gueuze with the full roast body of Imperial Stout.

Bottle shared at Deanso’s crappy music tasting. Pours black with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, horse blanket, light chocolate and barnyard. Flavour is moderate sweet and sour, light bitter. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Sampled from bottle @ Dean plays crappy music tasting. Opaque pitch black color, small light brown head. Smell sourness and horse blanket. Taste sourness and not nice at all. Sour fruits. Don’t like it.

Bottle 330ml.Clear dark brown black colour with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, beige to light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, horse blanket, barnyard, leather, funky, wood. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet, light to moderate acidic and bitter with a long duration, dark berry, sharp. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. IMO. Aroma was so great, but flavor was a bit more like a Imp. Stout that had gone wrong .. [20130126]

Bottle thanks to Ken at the 0-65% tasting. Gusher! It pours very dark brown with a thick tan head. The nose is sweet apple, barnyard, floral, hay, nice lambic character, tart pear and a faint hint of roasted malt. The taste is initially tart, lemon, Granny Smith apple, wood, grapefruit, some acidity, sour watermelon and only a faint hint of roasted malt in the background with a dry finish. Medium body, moderate/lively carbonation and slightly sticky mouth-feel. Interesting, unique and well balanced. Very impressive indeed. Definitely feels more like a sour beer than an imperial stout. Bravo Durham!

Bottle at the 0-65% Tasting, London - thanks to Jack for bringing. A light gusher. Pours rich brown with a tan cream head. Smells like a geueze, not a dark beer - quite an impressive feat. Big sour flavor, some poo, mellow grassy bitterness, almost no dark beer character. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation and a soft, creamy mouthfeel. Clean finish with light manure, good sourness, light grass. Exceptional. Biggest surprise of the tasting. Well done, Durham.

The 0-65 tasting. Four guys, fourteen beers, average abv 12.9%, 65 mins! Opaque dark brown beer, tiny tan head. Light and interesting lambic nose. Light palate, fairly soft. Mellow sour citrus, lambic like but quite soft. The dark malt is hardly there but what there is smooth. Light, smooth finish, a tiny bit sour. You would struggle to id this as Impy Stout in a blind tasting - there is a definite lambic vibe here. Very unusual and interesting.

Thanks to Durham Brewery for the taster
Very dark ruby, ruby edges, off white head
Aroma - very fruity sour, light vinegar, port, deep red berries, dark fruits, no roast malt here, interesting, complex
Taste as main flavour, complex rich fruits, touch fruity red wine vinegar, quite sour, complex, hint of chocolate and deep malt underneath, the wild yeast has knocked out almost all the impy stout flavour, great flavour, booze fairly well hidden
Palate - soft carb, surprising thinnish body, sour but balanced by sweetness of the fruit malts. Finish - lingering, warm, now the Temptation comes thorough, impy dark choc, rich dark fruits (less red berries)
Overall - Well this experiment paid off - probably one of the best beers they have done. Is it better than Temptation? I think it just is but they both get 4.1 - BTW The taste seems to have changed so much it really isn’t an imperial stout anymore

Shared bottle at Cotteridge Wines, this shouldn’t work but oddly it does imperial stout with a Geuze sourness. I should be having this again unless the bottle consumed was my save. Great artwork on the bottle.
