From the hazelnut capital of the United States, this nutty twist on a European brown ale was originally crafted by Rogue Brewmaster John Maier's good friend and avid home-brewer, Chris Studach. Hazelnut Brown Nectar offers a hazelnut aroma with rich nutty flavor and a smooth malty finish. 14°

Tap@Taphouse, Copenhagen - brown pour with beige head. Aroma and taste is toasted and sweet malty, with some high nutty hazelnut prominence, some caramel and cocoa notes in support, very moreish brown.

12 ounce bottle into signature pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big caramel, hazelnut, brown sugar, brown bread, toffee, toasted biscuit, light chocolate, herbal, floral, and nutty/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balanced of dark/bready malt, hazelnut, and light earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, hazelnut, brown sugar, brown bread, toffee, toasted biscuit, light chocolate, herbal, floral, and nutty/toasted earthiness. Slight herbal hop and roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, hazelnut, brown sugar, brown bread, toffee, toasted biscuit, light chocolate, and nutty/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, hazelnut, and light earthy hop flavors; with a good bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly silky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent brown ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, hazelnut, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Tap at Harry’s Hofbrau in San Jose. Aroma is a rich hazelnut and sweet malt both showing strongly. Clear brown with tan head. Taste is delicate nuttiness that really marries well with the malt. Moderate residual sweetness and crystal malt flavors are very nice. This was very enjoyable.

Pours a brownish amber hue with a not so long-lasting tan head. Aroma is mostly nutty: hazelnut (but of course), walnut, chocolate, prunes, figtree leaf, honey, brown sugar. Balanced in the mouth: seems sweet due to its aroma, but then it’s not. Medium-bitter finish.

At a tasting, thanks, small bubbly head, hazy brown and red color, aroma of cake and nuts with just a spicey hint, flavor of cake and nuts with some milk chocolate, rounded and drinkable but one dimensional.

Bottle: Reddish-amber coloured, hazy, bigger -slowly collapsing - brownish head; distinctive - surprise, surprise - nutty traces in the moderate malty and fruity nose, some hop-illusions in the background; sweet-bitter flavour, a bit tart; shorter nutty and bitter finish. Surely good, but not my favourite…

Bottle at home, dark brown with beige head. Smells awkward. Weirdest aroma, very mouldy, sickly, boiled sweet sterilised milk, lactoderm, sour wood, cream, hazelnuts are only in the background. Taste is moderate bitter, sickly and light sour. I can’t match the ratings I read with what I’m tasting. It’s disgusting. Like drinking cold puke. Tastebuds say no. Bad nutwater. Little to no carbonation. Weird creepy taste. Goosebumps. Bottle says best by 05/2016.
