This strong, dark lager was originally brewed as a liquid bread to sustain Bavarian monks while fasting. Its complex malt character comes from brewing with many varieties of dark roasted caramel malt and long periods of cold storage.

12 oz. bottle. Dark, ruby brown color, with a small, vanishing, off-white head. The aroma is rye, black bread, caramel, juniper, and light hop bitterness. Very sweet up front, with a good bitterness in the finish. Medium body, spicy, and chalky. Overall, this is a pretty good beer, but I’d expect more from a doppelbock.

Bomber courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours clear deep ruby reddish brown with a frothy goldenish brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet, sour, vinous and malty with dark grapes, wood, toffee, lemon zeat, vanilla fudge, dusty cocoa powder, dark bread, resin, hay and caramel. Taste is tiny sweet and sour with dark bread, grapes, lemon juice, wood, red wine vinegar, orange zest, lemon hard candy, leather, grass, dark plums, cherries, biscuits and hints of port wine. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, tiny tart and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sour and tiny tart with grapes, plums, cherries, wood, dark bread and hints of red wine vinegar. Good and very vinous but not sure it’s supposed to be this sour.

Lovely deep garnet colour. Aroma has dried cherry accents, chewy dark malts (light molasses) and some alcohol. Fairly smooth body, albeit with some alcohol character. There’s some background nuts and chocolate but for whatever reason this isn’t hitting the post as well as I figured a Sprecher Doppelbock would.

16oz bottle. Deep, dark, red brown color with no real head. Sweet malty aroma, touch of alcohol in it. Rich, sweet, and creamy, with only an inkling of hops in the initial mouthfeel. Sweet chocolate malt aftertaste. Develops some decent Bocky yeast tastes as it warms. Nothing exceptional, but does have redeemable qualities.

courtesy of keifdog. Pours ruby/amber and tan head. aroma and taste have the signature doppelbock. Lots of malts with caramel notes, sweet almost sugary. Light hints of dark fruits. Good stuff, cant go wrong with Sprecher.
