Draft @ BrewDog Shepherds Bush, Shepherds Bush W12. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate licorice and vanilla aroma. Roasted malty chocolate and licorice flavor. Has a roasted malty licorice and chocolate finish with hints of vanilla.

Sample at All In Beer Fest. Opaque black color with small beige head. Smell and taste malts, roast, liquorice, a hint of sweet liquorice, some alcohol, roast bitter finish. Medium body, a bit fizzy carbonation.

Svart med lavt lys brunt skum. Lukter salt lakris, jern og mørke frukter. Fyldig. Lite bitterhet, noe søtlig. Mørk sjokolade, mørke frukter og kakao.

33cl bottle at home, bought from a local bottle shop. Pours opaque black with thick creamy beige lasting head. Medium to full body, creamy/oily texture, pleasant and rich mouthfeel, average carbonation, strong in alcohol but not in a bad way, good lacing. Aromas of roasted barley, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, coffee. Similar tastes on the tongue, along with bittersweet backbone, citrus, orange peel, spicy notes, licorice, strong malty character. Very tasty, rich in complexity, very balanced. Resembles the character of a robust porter, but hey, that’s how barley wine works, right? I really wish I had a cigar to pair it with right now. Great ale!!!

Appearance is black, with a light brown two-finger head which lasts. Looks very good. Aroma- vanilla, caramel, chocolate biscuit, roast malt, hoppy hints, treacle, hint of booze. Taste- dark chocolate, plenty of vanilla but it isn’t too dominant. Coffee, roast malt, burnt toast, caramel, fruity, bitter orange peel. Hoppy finish. Nice and complex, with a syrupy slick mouthfeel.

Medium dark-beige head over jet-black beer. New World hops, watercress, bit of vanilla; roasted and sweetish nose. Vanillaaroma getting stronger warming up. Roasted, burnt, dry. Sweetness underneath. Vanilla hardly perceptible in the mouth. Alcohol and quite some fusels. Retronasal bit medicinal, diethylether; wood, ketones. Feels a lot more tittilating than it looks. Warming, well-bodied. Far from bad. But I’m guessing that they expected more fireworks from this fusion themselves.

330ml bottle at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki. Dark brown almost black color with beige brown head. Malty and hoppy aroma, light roasted, caramel, licorice, light fruity. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.

Bottle. Cotteridge. Dark, cola brown. Verges on black. Thin, dense, sticky, messy, tan head. Leggy and lazily oily. Looks great. Candied orange peel hop. Blackcurrant and chocolate sweets. Soft, white chocolate maltiness. Get the oak chip thing. Smells as good as it looks. Taste is woody bitter. White chocolate sweetness in the mix. Full body. Not overly rich. Easy drinking. Finish has a rising, woody, slightly tangy bitternes. Lovely.

On tap at Craft Room, the only keg that got here, cheers to the Craft Room people for that! Almost black body, small off white head. Initial hop blast, herbs, lemon, light chocolate and alcohol present. Relatively full, nice taste, herbs again, lemon, medium body, some solid roastiness, but the nice hop/malt interplay is slightly marred by an unincorporated ethanol note that persists a bit here and there. Slightly raw perhaps. Still, a job well done for Brewdog and their fans!
