Since man began pondering the great mysteries of the universe, one question has persisted: is the pumpkin, the most obtuse of the gourds, inherently good in nature? The philosophers at Cigar City Brewing have attempted to answer this eternal query by marrying the gourd with the complimentary flavors of Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican allspice, Zanzibar cloves and nutmeg. The answer presents itself in the bottle of high-gravity complexity you now hold in your hand, and the answer is good. This Imperial Pumpkin Ale was aged in two different types of barrels; half was aged in rum barrels and half was aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle. Pours a mostly clear brown hue with a small white head. A big barrel nose. Sweet, rich spices, hot rum and whiskey. Very big.

750mL bottle pours with a clear deep amber to rutty ruby red colored body that supports a light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up smooth bourbon, brown sugar, cinnamon and then a soft smelling blend of rum, brown sugar, pumpkin and nutmeg. The taste delivers smooth soft silky richness as your palate is hugged by nectar rich residual sugars, smooth soft bourbon, brown sugar and pumpkin. To midway the rum, nutmeg, cinnamon and a bit of a brown sugar infused prune sensation all come to the surface. Wow. This fits together wonderfully.

Sample at Beer Meets Wood on 09/23/2017. Cloudy brownish-amber color with a medium light beige head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Small patches of lace. Bourbon, pumpkin spice, malt and oak in the nose. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, spice and caramel malt. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and pumpkin pie aftertaste. Good beer all around.
