Poured from the tap at Taipei airport. Very dark brown with beige head. Starts with mild caramel malt into a roast malt finish, hint of nuttiness.

On tap in Eslite. This beer gave me huge problems rating. It is called a Dunkel and styled on ratebeer as a Stout. I really don’t think it fits either description well. However it is very interesting because it takes this dark style of beer and makes it work in Taipei where even in the winter it is 25C and humid. I have rated it on a hedonic scale on this basis. If I rated it against style it would fare much worse. I think it is important to consider the geography and climate and be open to adjustment of style (although I am wary of the fact that so much asian beer has most of the flavour removed). So on with the review... It is black and hazy (actually held against a strong light it is red). It has an OK beige head which is rather thin for the style. The aroma is subtle - dark malt with a hint of coffee. The mouthfeel is light and fizzy, which is wrong for the style, but quite pleasant in this climate, but even so it was a little too fizzy. The flavour was light for the style and to me more stout than dunkel. The flavours were well balanced in a stout sort of way, just lighter.
