A collaboration between Bret & Eric Kuhnhenn and Erik Harms of Dragonmead, this beer truly defies categorization. This beer is not for the hopheads - this is an intense malt-bomb. Heathen starts off similar to a traditional German Doppelbock, then goes to 11... 12.5 actually. Rich malt notes persist with flavors and aromas reminiscent of candied fruits, Christmastime spices, and a touch of smokiness. Very little bitterness throughout with flavors that persist long after the swallow. If Doppelbock was known as "liquid bread," this Triple Bock is more like "Liquid Sandwich."

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, Winter 2011 vintage. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a small foamy khaki head with poor retention, that reduces to a ring of lace instantly. Ni glass lacing, and a fair amount of alcohol legs. Aromas of huge raisin, prune, caramel, toffee, molasses, toast, licorice, dark bread, earth, light nuttiness, wood, and light bourbon. Damn nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity of malty flavors. Taste of big raisin, prune, dried fruit skin, licorice, toffee, molasses, caramel, toast, dark bread, leather, light nuttiness, wood, light bourbon, and earthiness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark fruits, toffee, molasses, caramel, toast, dark bread, leather, light nuttiness, wood, earth, and light bourbon on the finish for a while. Damn nice balance and complexity of malty flavors; with almost zero cloying sweetness present on the finish. Light carbonation and very full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial bock style. Great balance and complexity of malt flavors; and quite smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle, 355ml shared with Lars Marius at Schouskjelleren. Clear, dark ruby red body. Naked surface and just a few spots on the glass. Wood and dried fruits to the nose. Bread, earth and tart berries to the taste buds promoting a jam-like impression. Lingering malt-fruity ending. Powerful and full bodied, still rather smooth on the swallow. Enjoying (Oslo, 10.12.2012).

Cloudy red brown beer, no real head. Semi dry palate, Intense sourish fruits with robust malt that tastes of toffee and aging! The fruit has cherry and raspberry identifiable but is otherwise generic. A little cream before the neutral finish.

New Beer Distributors, NY 355ml ($7): Pours a dark reddish brown color with a quickly descending brownish head. Aroma is molasses, caramel, dark fruits, and barely any booze. Taste is slightly bitter. There are more hops than in most doppelbocks. There be plenty of sweetness. This be a thick and syrupy jawn. Aftertaste is certainly there. Interesting Triple Bock id that style truly exists. This is for sure better than the Sam Adams version.

Bottle - thanks UncleRudy! Pours dark reddish brown with a small tan fizzy head that dissipates almost immediately with no lacing. Aroma is caramel, molasses, dried fruits, alcohol. Flavor is the same, medium sweet, prune. Alcohol notes present throughout and into the warming, light bitter finish. Something almost metallic in the finish. Full bodied and rich in the mouth, but almost no carbonation.

12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning (at €10,-!). 2011 edition. Clear, deep dark brown color. Off white head that immediately disappears (and I tend to maintain my glassware well). Aroma’s: Sweet/dried fruit, molasses, alcohol. Retronasal also some caramel/toffee & lightly roasted malts. Flavor is sweet, caramel, sweet fruit, with some fruity sourness from the alcohol. Strong alcoholfeel, body is not too heavy, medium rather. Finishes somewhat dry on the tongue, with bready, malty sweetness. Nice to try but wouldn’t pay that again.
