A collaboration between Bret & Eric Kuhnhenn and Erik Harms of Dragonmead, this beer truly defies categorization. This beer is not for the hopheads - this is an intense malt-bomb. Heathen starts off similar to a traditional German Doppelbock, then goes to 11... 12.5 actually. Rich malt notes persist with flavors and aromas reminiscent of candied fruits, Christmastime spices, and a touch of smokiness. Very little bitterness throughout with flavors that persist long after the swallow. If Doppelbock was known as "liquid bread," this Triple Bock is more like "Liquid Sandwich."

12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning (at €10,-!). 2011 edition. Clear, deep dark brown color. Off white head that immediately disappears (and I tend to maintain my glassware well). Aroma’s: Sweet/dried fruit, molasses, alcohol. Retronasal also some caramel/toffee & lightly roasted malts. Flavor is sweet, caramel, sweet fruit, with some fruity sourness from the alcohol. Strong alcoholfeel, body is not too heavy, medium rather. Finishes somewhat dry on the tongue, with bready, malty sweetness. Nice to try but wouldn’t pay that again.

Bottle, vintage 2011, many thanks to coldbrewky. Dark brown color with small beige head. Roasted malt, coffee, dark fruits, molasses, caramel. Sweet roasted malt, dried fruit, toffee, dark fruits, burned sugar, alcohol, dark chocolate in background. Full bodied, nice sipper. Great beer, please give me more.

Bottle, 2011 vintage. It pours a clear, dark amber body and a minimal-sized beige head. Some alcohol on the nose, lots of dried fruits and caramel, some nuts. Rather warming on the palate, full-bodied and smooth. Dried fruits, caramel, booze, nuts and something berry-like in the flavor, which stretches out quite a bit. An intense beer, certainly nice, but I like the aroma better than the flavor, mostly because of the alcohol level I think. Wouldn’t mind drinking this again though. 120817

33 cl. bottle @ Delirium Hoppy Loft // dark pomegranate bordeaux beer, dark brown, rather than red hued, this actually just looks freaking red, I am getting absolutely zero head here // smell very heavily sweet, pure malts concentrate, thickest caramel malts I have ever smelled, sweet molasses, diabetic sweet, liquid brown sugar, toffee concentrate, very thick spices & winter cake, heavy stuff // taste is similar, heavily diabetic concentrate of caramel malts, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, spices, gummy bears, red berries, winter cake, lager yeast with soy sauce, gravy in the beginning, thick toffee aftertaste, very heavy stuff // quite thick, not much carbonation // quite interesting but it feels like they pushed this beer a bit too far with the very high alcohol for a lager & what feels like an exorbitant amount of ingredients that were needed to make this happen // this is not easy to drink // very heavy stuff

355ml bottle. Clear dark brown colour with small, frothy to creamy, minimally lacing, off-white head. Intense caramel malty aroma with nuttily notes, toffee, biscuit, some alcohol. Taste is sweet caramel malty, has a dark fruity tart touch, with a strong (too strong), brandy-like, warming, biting alcohol note. Nice balance between sweet and tart notes, but too much alcohol - or at least not well enough hidden alcohol.
