A collaboration between Bret & Eric Kuhnhenn and Erik Harms of Dragonmead, this beer truly defies categorization. This beer is not for the hopheads - this is an intense malt-bomb. Heathen starts off similar to a traditional German Doppelbock, then goes to 11... 12.5 actually. Rich malt notes persist with flavors and aromas reminiscent of candied fruits, Christmastime spices, and a touch of smokiness. Very little bitterness throughout with flavors that persist long after the swallow. If Doppelbock was known as "liquid bread," this Triple Bock is more like "Liquid Sandwich."

A reddish copper ale with a thin off white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with treacle, plums, interesting. In mouth, a sweet fruity malt with dark fruits, molasses, alcohol warmth, very very smooth. On tap at Beer Authority.

Bottle at Port Street Beer House; dark burgundy red pour with zero head, sweet and meaty aroma, very sweet taste like treacle, but surprisingly light mouthfeel, a real sipper.

On tap at MBGSF 2013. Pours a dark copper amber with an off-white head. Fruity caramel aroma, hinting of bourbon. Grainy wheat flavors, caramel, candy fruit, again bourbon-like flavors. Good, but a bit too much graininess.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, tons of chocolate, earth, anise, fennel, caramel, cinnamon and a lot of nice and smooth alcohol. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavour with a great anise and caramel sweetness right behind. Aftertaste shows a good malt note, some sweet chocolate notes and decent complexity, all with a very smooth alcohol note and a nice finish. Overall, a great beer with a lot of alcohol but seems like a lot less, all with some good flavours and relatively good complexity. Great to try and although expensive, well worth the money. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 09-June-2012 for US$7.00 sampled at home in New Paltz, New York on 05-July-2013. 2011 bottle//bought in June 2012//drunk in July 2013

355 ml bottle, vintage 2011, kindly shared by abemorsten. ABV is 12.5%. Dark brown colour, minimal head. INTENSE sweetish malty aroma, bordering on "sickly". Strong oaky notes too, hints of liquorice. Low carbonation. Very malty flavour, sweet and oaky but not extreme - however, the maltiness is not balanced by sufficient hops.

0.355l bottle from Cask Pub & Kitchen, London. This is a deep dark brown one with a little bit of red in it, and it has a near non-existing thin sidesticking off-white head. On the aroma I get a nice sweetness with some smoke, ham, thin licorice and some dark fruits. It actually smells quite nice. It has a average+ carbonation level with those small prickling bubbles wrapped in a oily to sticky, full-bodied mouthfeel. It tastes of chocolate, light smoke, dark malts, booze, earth and traces of iron. A bit sweet and sticky perhaps, but the alcohol cuts through and gives it a kinda bitterness I guess. Biting and almost stingy earthy finish with traces of licorice in the aftertaste. This is my first ever beer from the legendary Kuhnhenn brewery, and I'm looking forward to my next already. 09.11.2012

35,5 cl bottle vintage 2011 @ olio
Aroma is rather malty and sweet with caramel, toffee and hints of American hops. Flavour is malty and sweetish with berries, some chocolate and woody notes. Well, this is quite close to what it promises to be: a boosted doppelbock. The alcohol is rather well hidden, I expected it to come more through.

355ml bottle

2011 vintage - Pours dark brown with no head. Strong malty aroma with notes of bread, rye, hints of alcohol and spices. Taste is sugary, sweet, sticky malts, hints of rye, bread and alcohol. Finish is sticky, sweet and syrupy with lots of malts and alcohol pushing through. Unbalanced, way too malty and sweet for my taste.

12oz bottle pours a slightly viscous, translucent copper amber with some thin, off white head. Nose of wood pulp, roasted root veg, lots of booze, bananas, rum, some mushroom, heavy malt, caramel, white whiskey. Flavor is sweet, but not cloying, some fish sauce, malty, caramel, mushroom, wood pulp, spiced rum, some pineapple upside down cake, brown sugar. Full, sweet, slightly spicy finish. I think one extra year in the bottle would be perfect or this.
