What does it mean? Yes, what indeed does it all mean. Meaning of course is elusive and illusive. It can’t or shouldn’t be found on this bottle. Should it? Yet what if it was? Would you begin to look for pearls of wisdom or life direction on a beer label? Perhaps it’s been there all along. Since meaning is a mere illusion, perhaps we shouldn’t let it have any influence on our destiny. This particular beer refused to succumb to the illusion of meaning or allow capricious parameters to have any influence on its own fermented fate. Are we even asking the right question? Are you feeling frustrated in the emptiness? If so, that could be because someone got to this beer before you, and thus there’s a reason for that emptiness. It’s empty. And if so, perhaps there indeed is not any meaning for you here after all.

Hoppy aroma of pine needle, thistle, and dark roasted malt, probably the most pine I have encountered in one beer. Mahogany to black color, thick beige head, good lacing. Charred oak, a touch of molasses, dark roasted malt, quite a bit of licorice, and lots of pine, which remain well after swallowing. Lacking in carbonation. Extremely well put together. Complex without being a chore to drink. Alcohol well concealed. Special beer, that many can appreciate.

Bottle from Beer Run on 02/15/2010. Batch 378 Bottled 25/11/10? Dark black body with a medium creamy light brown head. Big floral and citrus hop aroma with some resiny notes and some roastiness. Big citrus and piney hop flavor, lots of roast and chocolate. Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

Bottle from Utobeer market stall. Pours black with a tan head. Smokey aromas with a bit of coffee, raisins, roasted malts and some slight sourness in there too. Flavours of licorice, spices, chocolate, coffee, bit earthy, nutty. Smokey, malty mouthfeel. Finishes dry, alcohol warming and hoppy.

Bottle at Q-Brick. Blackish with a very thin head. Complex aroma with berries, pine, grass. Big fragrant hops. Black, dark, harsh flavor with chocolate, tobacco, raisins, wood, licorice and great grassy, earthy, piney hops. Very complex and interesting.

Aroma: Roasted malts, citrus hops, licorice, caramel, earth, and chocolate
Appearance: Pours a dark brown color with a thin, lasting, light brown head
Flavor: Up-front taste is roasted malts/chocolate, with a bitter finish
Palate: Fairly full bodied and smooth, almost creamy, texture
Overall Impression: This is a pretty solid beer. A nice collaboration effort between these two adventurous brewers. I like this beer, a nice attempt at something somewhat different. A good roasted flavor and some hops. Its not overly complex, but it works pretty well.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into a shaker. Tan head with good retention leaves sheet lacing as it recedes to pancake and hug rim. Chocolate and grapefruit aromas. Creamy with upfront chocolate turning resinous in the lasting finish.

Bottle. Very dark, almost black with a small brownish head. Aroma of hops, roasted malt, chocolate, spices, yeast and some orange. Some roasted malt, orange and spices was the first things I noticed in the taste. Quite sweet and alcoholic, still quite balanced. Drinkable but a little too spicy for my taste.

Tap at Sunswick. Pours a dark, mysterious hue with a thick, beige head. Nose is burnt malts, with notes of coffee and chocolate. Flavor follows in a similar vein, though some hints of dark fruits make their way into the fray. Only in the swallow and aftertaste is the hoppiness really apparent, and the bitter finish helps to balance he mostly sweet, dark and malty flavor. Great beer.
