Carling Black Label developed as a brand in 1927 from the Canadian brewery Carling O’Keefe's existing Black & White Lager. It was introduced into the UK in 1952. The brand became hugely successful in the UK via a very popular ad campaign with the slogan "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label". The name changed from Carling Black Label to Carling, with the subtitle Original Lager, in 1997.

Can on a train, due to necessity. Bad idea. Why can’t our trains sell any decent beers? Pish.

450ml Aluminium Bottle: slightly out of date when opened at home on 16 Mar 2013. Poured into two Veltin Pilsner stemmed tulips. Looked fine: your usual bright, clean and clear golden lager look. The thin white head didn’t hang around, again typical of the style. Almost odourless: wet cardboard with dishwater smells if you want to be nasty. The mouthfeel is dry and crisp but there is very little actual taste: grainy flavour if pushed for a defining feature of the taste, otherwise as tasteless as it is odourless. Refreshing I suppose it is: a good beer it isn’t. My scores are being kind.

Tap - Pale golden/yellow body. Head was dying before I recognized any texture or colour. Harsh hop aroma. Sweetish taste. Quite crisp palate, due to the high carbonation level. Headlines = "Fizzy and tasteless." Why do they sell so much?

From a 500ml can on 12/1/2013. Pours a clear pale golden with quite a big fluffy head. Has a faint stale aroma of grain and chemicals. The flavour is a bit a sweet cereal malt, with just a hint of hops. A dreadful, dull lager. Suggest that you avoid unless you have no other option.

On tap @ one of the many Beefeaters. Pours golden with steady bubbles and next to no head. The nose is faint, though slightly metallic and honeyed. The taste has more of the same. The palate is light to non-existent and there isn’t really a middle part but it does the usual lager thing of being dry and refreshing on the finish. I can see why they serve it cold. It could be worse as it’s not offensive, rather it’s more on the tasteless side if anything.

Sample at a tasting at Systembolaget, September 2012. Clear golden. What a dull beer. Thin with a weak aroma and taste. Dill, cake batter and bread. Also some sour notes.
