A blend of a mature and young ale creates a porter of traditional character that’s dark cherry in colour and complex in taste. Aromas of liquorice, rum, raisin and chocolate with hints of coffee are in abundance in this full-bodied, warming ale.

Old rating. Bottle from Old Town. Aromas of cacao, dark fruit and roasted malts. Taste is more of the same with a bitter roasted coffee-like finish. Oily mouthfeel. Not bad but not as good as the cream stout.

BOTTLE 50 CL. Brown malt and bread, a touch of caramel in the aroma, dark bread crust, and a drop of hops too. Not much roasted notes, like chocolate or coffee. It is half-way between a mild and a modern porter. The flavour is brown malts, very restrained caramel sweetness, and a solid spicy bitter finish. Smooth mouth-feel, despite the lack of carbonation. it does not feel flat or watery. Nothing extreme here, just a smooth balanced beer. Surprisingly good.

Bottle. Appearance is dark ruby, with a ridiculous 5+ finger foamy light-brown head, which very slowly reduces to three fingers. Aroma- chocolate, burnt malt, honey, toast, cocoa, caramel, dark fruit undertones. Taste- initial hit of chocolate and coffee bitterness, a definite hop presence, dark malt, burnt toast, chocolate-covered caramel, quite a bit of carbonation cutting through a foamy mouthfeel, a clinging slightly bitter, burnt finish. Very good.

Bottle from Booths, MediaCityUK [101114]
Very dark caramel brown, clear, frothy white head
Aroma of spicy English hops, some skunk, mellow roast, some dark stone fruits
Taste of caramel, roasted malts, earthy hops, bit spicy, some bitter coffee, lots of twiggy hops, getting a rusty yeast...hmm not liking the flavour of this much
Palate - Soft carb, medium body. Finish quite dry, lingering spicy earthy hops, bitter roast
Overall - Sort of an old ale / porter cross. OK - just not me this beer
