Bottle. Slightly sour barley malt aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Slightly sweet creamy barley malt and light herbal hops flavor. Nice body. Very reminiscent of a German Helles. Very nice - wonder how many other beers were dumbed down during the 70s and 80s.

Whole Foods Market, DC six-pack pounders ($6): Pours yellow with white head. Aroma is nonoffensive, with grains, sugar, and a modicum of hops. The taste is pretty smooth, and has more flavor than your standard pale lager. This is better than normal Schlitz, but I donβt think that it is better by enough.

12 oz bottle given to me by my Mother in law for Christmas. Pour is a clear light golden with a one inch head that falls noisily with no lacing. Aroma is straight forward sweet malt and general cereal grains. Fairly mild nose, though nothing offensive or unnatural. Taste is the nose, malt sweetness and toast grain and perhaps a brief touch of floral hop. The finish is a bot watery, and finishes more or less clean. Inoffensive, but dull taste. Palate is medium to thin up front, then thins out a bunch in the middle and especially the finish. A bit better than the rest of the macro crowd, I suppose.

Pour is a bright gold with a small fizzy white head. Aroma is grain and corn. Flavor is about the same. Lots of adjuncts and no hops what so ever. Its beers like this that make me glad Iβm living today with so many craft beer options. It fills out a mix a six and that is the best thing i have to say about this one.

Bottle. Pleasantly surprised that one of my cousins found this beer. Nothing really stands out about it, but just the fact that itβs the "classic formula" from Schlitz, I find myself getting more upset about how much they screwed up. The number one beer for years (decades) screwed up, and was replaced with something only marginally better than the Frankenstein concoction that the suits had come up with that ultimately destroyed their market share.

Bottle. Light yellow body with an off-white head that diminishes. Light aroma of grain and toasted malt with just a hint of corn and grass. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Clean, crisp. Light to medium body, lively carbonation. Though not much to the nose, this does have some nice flavor and is fairly refreshing. One of the better pale lagers.

This beer pours a clear yellow color with a thin and fizzy ivory white head that burns down quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Light grainy malt nose with a hint of hops. Light body with flavors of stale malt and grassy hops. The finish is mildly sweet malt with a short weak hops aftertaste. Overall I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this "lost" recipe and the 100s of other beers of this style that have come out since the 1960βs.

12 oz bottle, 49Β’ loose bottle at Sam’s, Downer’s Grove. Pours the usual pale yellow, but with a bit of a rocky head. Corny "beer" smell, which probably is the 1960’s formula. I’ve gotta admit, there’s a surprising "zip" to the taste. That’s the only way to describe it. A slight crunch of malt that doesn’t get too tangled up in adjuncts. If not pilsner in color and malt bill, there’s at least a spicy hint of German hop. No, not too sweet, but with an even finish instead. Mouthfeel tickles like a good bowler’s beer. As a macro lager, it’s not that bad, and yeah, could be my cheap beer of choice during hard times to come.
