This exit is probably best known for it’s view of the Newark airport, but it is also home to the Port of Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest in the world. Elizabeth was also New Jersey’s original capitol. Many food products come through the port, 9 including the Belgian chocolate we’re using for what we’re calling an import/export stout.
This fuller “export style” stout gives a sturdy base for the rich chocolate flavor. More than 600 pounds of Belcolade chocolate went into this brew. A mix of imported and domestic malts are highlighted by roastiness from dark wheat. An Irish ale yeast and Pacific Northwest hops combine to create an excellent dessert beer as well as one to share in the cool weather with friends.

Black with a large foamy brown head. Roasty with cola, anise, cocoa, wood and an herbal note. Long finish. Medium body. Disappointing.

Flight at brewery. Just a little milky chocolate that overpowers any beer. Too much and Yoo-hoo like. Nope.

Pours a near black from a bottle, nearly no head, what little there is quickly dissipates with medium sized bubbles. Chocolate and roasted malty aroma, similar flavor, a little licorice on the backdrop. Sweet, a little fizzy. Okay beer.

Growler from The Grove in Yardville, NJ. I thought this was retired, so was surprised to find it. Translucent cola brown color. Small bubbly tan head. Big cocoa dark malt nose. Reminiscent of YooHoo. Flavor is sweet cocoa and spicy hops. Taste is a combination of Tootsie Rolls and herbal hops, with a touch of vanilla bean. Chocolate dominates the palate. More like a Porter than a Stout.

750 mL bottle from Ye Old Spirit Shop, Frederick, MD. Pours a nearly black color with a thin brown head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malts, vanilla. The taste is bitter roasted malts, smoke, chocolate, cocoa, a SweetTart kind of taste, faint vanilla. Bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

bottle pours jet black with a thin tan head that leaves a light film on top of the beer the length of the glass. Aroma is big cocoa, bitter and sweet with some coffee notes and dark fig and cherries. Flavor is big roast and ash with lots of bitterness in the form of burnt sugars and bakers cocoa. The chocolate lingers in the finish for a solid minute. Good stuff.

Nearly black with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate malts, light roasted notes, cocoa, and melted caramel. Silky smooth body. Flavor is sweet, lightly roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, and a hint of vanilla. Smooth from start to finish. Great beer and best Flying Fish I’ve had by far.

Capped 750 from Total Wine in Roseville, CA. Pours very dark brown with a creamy/foamy 4 finger dark tan head which does a bit of lacing. It smells like rich chocolate ice cream. Med body. Flavor is slightly bitter chocolate followed by burnt malt. Very smooth. Quite tasty.
