VooDoo Vator Dopplebock tempers the sweetness of caramel malt with the crisp, more nutty flavor of Munich malt. Despite the depth of color, burnt flavors are not present. Traditional extended lagering makes the VooDoo Vator deceptively smooth though high in alcohol. Be warned.

A stronger, darker version of the Bocks of Germany, dopplebocks were designed in monasteries for sustenance during fasting. Rich, intensely malty and lightly hopped, these strong lagers require extended conditioning to dissipate the acidity associated with strong ales.

bottle - Pours dark brown with a small tan head. It has a malty aroma with a slight hint of chocolate. The taste is very sweet with not much going on. It’s medium bodied and finishes sweet. Overall it’s just okay.

12oz bottle. Deep opaque brown, approaching black body. Thin, oily beige head. Sweet chocolate tinged aroma. Leaning pretty heavily into the brown chocolate flavors, this is a pretty good Stateside Doppelbock. Soft delicate noble hop balance. Smooth lager tones, still remains pretty drinkable even with the high ABV. Doesn’t really have the big, pungent yeast characteristics you might expect, rather straightforward. A touch better than average, for an American version.

Bottle. Sweet fruity prune and molasses aroma. Dark murky brown with a small tan head. Roasty malt, molasses, prune, and very light bitter hop flavor. Medium body, low carbonation. Pretty darn tasty.

A deep dark brown bock with a thick lacing brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with molasses, dark plums, light cherry acidity, very nice. In mouth, a smooth grassy and acidic bock with ground cherries, light peaty dak malt, light lactic acids, nice. Bottle about 3 years old.

Bottle. Molasses, prune malt and alcohol aroma. Dark brown-black with moderate head. Slightly sweet molasses malt, oak and mild alcohol and herbal hops flavor. Not bad.

8/29/2009 Pours a dark brown with beautiful mahogany hues when held to light. Bubbly beige head dissipates, but impales the glass with loads of lace. Smell is very sweet, caramel, brown sugar, apples, some alcohol. Taste is full of prunes, brown sugar, caramel, cherries and maybe apples. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy, carbonation is medium, body is a little thinner that expected. Decent brew, but I think this may not be the freshest example of this brew. I wasn’t overwhelmed with this one, not overly turned off, maybe one day when I get a fresh pint at the brewery I can revisit.

12 oz bottle. Deep, dark brown color. Small, thin white head. Left little lacing. Aroma of Dark fruit and light malt. Taste is toasted malt with a sweet, light caramel as well. Body is a bit thin. However the higher ABV is hidden well. It’s more then likely the best beer from this brewery, I wasn’t a fan of the others I’ve had. LiteWait shared a bottle with me.

Bottle shared by manic. Pours a clear reddish brown with a thin tan head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of nuts, toffee and caramel. The taste is nuts, caramel, raisin and a metallic finish. Medium bodied. Not terribly good.

Peculier Pub ($6): Purchased for me by my friend who spilled a whole lot of beer on my pants. I got an Atwater in return. Pours a really dark color for a doppelbock with a tan head. Aroma of dark fruit and roasted malts. Body is not as heavy as I would expect from a doppel (leading me to believe, correctly, that this is not a very good representation of the style). A little sweet, but lacking the particular character of the German cousins. Caramel and fruit flavors are most present.

Tap @ Boston/NY 2009. Dark color, short head. Aroma of roasted malt, on a bitter background. Quite strong taste for a doppelbock.
