Bottle bought @ Etre. Vintage unknown but looks pretty old and worn. Pours tiny hazy orange with a rather small fizzy offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sour and funky with lemon juice, leather, orange zest, barnyard, dry soil, hay and rubber. Taste is sour with crackers, lemon juice, hay, dry soil, barnyard, leather, dried pine needles, wood and hints of unripe grapes. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, tart and light to medium bodied. finish is sour and funky with crackers, lemon juice, orange zest, leather, hay, horseblanket and barnyard. Quite good but nothing fancy...

27/IX/13 - 37.5cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: n/a (2013-902)

Little cloudy orange beer, small creamy off-white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of cork, cellar, moldy and old. Yet I only have this bottle for about a year or so. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty sour, lemony, vinegar, little bitter, cork, bit moldy. Aftertaste: sourish and dry, tannins, bit woody, lemony, funky with some spices. It's a correct geuze, but not the best. And the cork probably ruined the aroma.

Bottle at home, BOE, 20/09/13. Lightly hazed golden with a moderate white head that soon dissipates and reduces to a swirl. Nose is lemon sherbet, light soap, dank wood, straw, touch of dry rot. Taste comprises tarte lemon rind, lemon dipped straw, earthy, grass, barnyard, light acidic notes and a little throat scrape to end. Medium bodied, fine carbonation with a little spritz, dry finish with dank notes. Decent enough but lower down the pecking order for the style.

De Troch oude lambic. no idea of the age. But it’s old. Aroma of fresh soap softens. Then a smooth aggressive gueuze. It’s amazing. Insane aroma. Really this is one of best beer experiences of my life. Weird discordant bass sax led jazz and a beer that blows everything I have had this week out of the water. Perfect carbonation. Sourness. Just incredible. Yes some age. But crap. It’s just shockingly good. And intense. Almost unrateable it’s that good.

Would you like a normal or a sour Geuze? Is what I heard at brewery when I was there during the Tour de Geuze – I was a bit flabbergasted and disappointed but I went a got a sour one anyway despite their disapproving looks. Murky sad orange looking, lightly hazy, only bubbles for the head. Smell is murky, stale water, sour malts, light tart citrus, rotting grains,… Taste is a bit watery, very weird, murky, dust, rotting mash and grains, rotting lemons and lemon peels, cobwebs, lactic,… Starts getting pretty nasty after a while. Flat. Too odd, it is their young lambic, the old ones I have had were actually quite yummy. Mmm … that is what I get for trying a sour one I suppose, the “normal” non-sour geuze by them is abysmal.
