Our first beer, Shoals Pale Ale debuted on July 16, 1994 on Portsmouth’s historic waterfront. Our interpretation of a classic English ale is copper-colored, medium-bodied and pleasantly hopped. Its flavor is delightfully complex yet balanced: tangy fruit at the start, with an assertive hop crispness and a long malty finish that one well-known beer writer has compared to the flavor of freshly-baked bread.
The Samuel Haley House, which is featured on the label still stands on Smuttynose Island, one of nine Isles of Shoals, just off the New Hampshire coast. The rich lore of the islands holds that Samuel Haley paid for this house with four bars of pirate silver he found exploring the island. And yes, there are hordes of seagulls on Smuttynose Island.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of toffee, chocolate and orange peel. Malty, fruity taste with toffee, chocolate, orange peel and a generous earthy bitterness in the finish (leaning in the English direction). Medium body, with balanced sweetness. Solid and tasty. Quite nice.

Bottle. A small, off-white to beige head sits on top of an unclear, golden-orange body. It’s a bit weak on the nose, slightly grassy, and with a nice blend of pale malts and citrus. The flavor isn’t much more pronounced than the aroma, and it’s lacking on bitterness too I think, both initially and in the finish. Medium to full body with pleasant carbonation level. A bit boring this one, but sure drinkable. 110401

Pours dark amber, angling towards read, with a modest head. The nose comes off grassy with a biscuity undertone, kinda mild for a pale. Starts biscuits-n-honey sweet, yet the hops quickly set things on a bitter course. This astringent finish seems a little much for an English Pale Ale, but the easygoing texture of Shoals makes it disappear from the pint fairly fast. (5/1/09)

Hazy amber color; very high carbonation, huge creamy head. The aroma is initially hoppy, good, but not fresh anymore, and indeed it turns into something more creamy later, with some vegetables. Medium body strength; sweet caramel flavor, quite strong bitterness, but unexciting overall.
