This stout has taken every inch of flavour from the barrels and then some. For the latest in the Abstrakt family – a lineage that celebrates experimentation at every turn – we have created a beer that celebrates in twelve (12) malts. As you can imagine, a dozen different malts produce a huge imperial stout and the combination of US and European hops are there to complement it; added only to the boil this latest Abstrakt is a champion of grain and ageing.

The aroma gives this away immediately, with edges of coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, forest fruits, and a vanilla sweetness mingling with a rye spiciness from the wood. We have also added coffee, honey, demerara sugar and milk sugars to the brewsheet – just to create even more layers of flavour. AB:27 is thick, smooth and flows into a warming finale that is unlike anything we have released before. But then that is why we have Abstrakt.

375ml bottle - Pours black with a small, slowly diminishing, frothy tan head. The aroma is rich roasted, dark malts, chocolate and bourbon with a hint of wood. A sweet roasted taste, bitter chocolate, dark roasted malt, liquorice, bourbon, and spicy flavours with a warming sweet roasted bitter finish.

Vollmundiger, cremig malziger Beginn. Gut! 10/13/14/14/13/14

375ml bottle. Pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, brown sugar, oak. Taste of very strong dark chocolate, alcohol, coffee, brown sugar, roasty bitterness, very boozy warming finish. Medium body, carbonation is a bit high, quite fizzy. Nice but really nothing special or worthy of being an Abstrakt release.

The 27th iteration in BrewDog’s ambitious (and expensive) Abstrakt series, a bourbon barrel aged imperial rye stout; this concept has been done by so many other breweries for so many years now that one could put forward that BrewDog seems to has lost its inspiration in this series, considering how original many of the older ones were… Anyway, sample from tap at BrewDog Brussels, thanks to Danai and to Craftmember for sharing. Thinnish but mousy, opening, greyish beige head, jet black robe. Strong bouquet of melting ‘fondant’ chocolate, bourbon, coffee liqueur, plum jam, pipe tobacco, vanilla whiff, ‘blood’-like iron, soy sauce, beef stock. Sweetish onset, candied figs, prunes, soft carb, full oily mouthfeel, walnutty, black-chocolatey and eventually coffeeish-roasty malt body with a vague ashy touch, its roasty bitterness enhanced by obviously very bourbon-like (sweet), heating alcohol. A fine BBA stout in all respects, but as said, I tend to expect more artistry and creativity from the Abstrakt series… In the old days, this would have been ‘just’ another BrewDog regular, I think.
