XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

22 oz. bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out dates and figs upfront, followed by cocoa. Flavour brings out a wonderful blend of dried fruits and cocoa upfront, with a touch of coconut and a little vanilla. The fruit and cocoa are the dominant flavours. Quite full-bodied, with a rich lingering finish. Not as good as the previous anniversary versions, but certainly very good.

Bomber received in trade. Pours brownish black with a frothy goldenish brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet, malty and spicy with roasted malts, dark chocolate, figs, dates, allspice, cloves, wood, dark roast coffee, caramel and sweet dark bread. Taste is sweet, slightly bitter and spicy with roasted malts, sweet dark bread, burnt caramel, fudge, allspice, cloves, coriander seeds, black pepper, moist wood, oatmeal cookies, vanilla fudge, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, brown sugar and hints of dark dried fruits. Mouthfeel is round, spicy astringent and medium bodied. Finish is bitter, malty and spicy with roasted malts, dates, figs, burnt cookies, cloves, allspice, black pepper, moist soil, charred wood and vanilla fudge. What’s up with all those spices. I had hoped for some dried dark fruit goodness but this is almost all spice...

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a medium dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma consists of black chocolate notes with some light liquor notes with some dried fruits notes as well. Taste is also a mix between some dark black chocolate notes with some dried fruits notes and some light liquor notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very nice drink though a bit too much of the dried fruits notes.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s 30th Birthday Bash - CBC Clerkenwell, London. Big thanks to the birthday boy! Pours black-brown with a creamy, tan head. Burnt sugar on the nose, lots of roast, charred malts and raisins. Medium to big sweet flavor with some earthy bitterness, burnt wood, chocolate syrup. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Bitter earth to finish, more burnt wood, dark chocolate, baking cocoa, burnt sugars more generally. Rich, lasting dark chocolate. Good bitterness to off-set the sugary chocolate. Big hitter. (April 2013, score: 4.1)
Bottle at the chris and ruth 2016 Shindig - London. Pours clear, deep brown with a frothy, tan head. The nose has a little mint, chocolate, roast. Medium sweet flavour with notes of chocolate, more mint, earth. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, fairly sweet, with nice gooey chocolate, scorched earth bitterness, cooling mint. Interesting. Probably a bit past its best. (August 2016, score: 3.5)
