Once upon a time it was the most award winning Pizza Port beer of all time. Now it has found a new home at The Lost Abbey.
A massive brown ale base that is made from four fermentable sugars including Malted Barley, Raisins, Candi Sugar and Sour Cherries, this beer is fully fermented before being placed in Bourbon barrels where the beer ages for one year with the Sour Cherries and the wild Brettanomyces yeast that we inoculate the barrels with.
One of the most complex and unique beers we make each year.

2012 bottle. Dark brown-orange, flavor and oily. Nose of vinegar, cherry, chocolate. Flavors of chocolate, cherry, yogurt, nice sour cherries. Smooth and completely (too) flat. Nice but did not live up to its reputation by any stretch. Alcohol well hidden, though it really misses the carbonation.

375 Bottle - 2012 vintage. Pours totally cloudy brown with a vanishingly small head that disappears rapidly leaving no lacing. Aroma is tart cherry, wood, caramel, dried fruits. Flavor is bracingly tart with light sweetness. Cherry and wood are the dominant characteristics. Dries out by the middle, leaving TART, woody notes and a groundswell of heat from the ABV. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel, but flat as a board. Interesting beer, but there is certainly nothing subtle about it. And why the fuck can’t Lost Abbey keep carbonation in their beers???

2009 edition, 375ml bottle.
A soft pop upon opening, it pours a very dark reddish brown with a fine layer of foam that shrinks quickly to a ring around the glass.
The smell has oodles of cherry tartness up front followed by some vanilla and a touch of oak.
The taste greets me again with a bucketload of cherry sourness and I'm reveling in that right now. Mmmm. Ok, vanilla notes are popping up as is an oakie woodsie flavour and more cherries...I can't help but believe that this is another brew that a wine drinker would have no problem enjoying. Oh yeah, the 11%abv gives me just a touch of warming after the swallow. No sign of it in the taste at all. Wow.
The mouthfeel is on the heavy side of light and the carbonation is light but I notice a slight tingle on my tongue before swallowing.
Drinkability? I'd have no problem finishing a 750 never mind this 375! This *is* a top notch brew and I'm very happy I made the commitment to get some. *Very* happy!

0.375l corked bottle from 2009. A treat! This is a lovely looking plush-plum-red one, no head what so ever. Lovely vinegar-like aroma with apples, paint thinner, balsamic, peppery spices, caramel, grapes, wood and soft yellow raisins with red stolen fruits. Really interesting and quite complex. It's really concentrated and just lovely on the flavor! Sticky boiled down green apples, something almost sea-like salty, red wine vinegar, wood, sour dry grapes, black pepper, and it has a lovely slightly stingy finish and aftertaste that tickles your throat on so many levels. 37,5 cl bottle (11,0%) @ olio as ”The Lost Abbey Cuvee de Tomme”. Thanks tiong! Rated on 10.2.2013. Very quickly disappearing, big‐bubbled head. Aroma has rum, raisins, whisky notes and red wine. Flavour is rather tart with red wine, some bourbon, woody notes and hints of raisins on some sips. Like a good red wine in the beer world. Very intensive and good, really slow beer like Angel’s Share. 8-4-9-4-17 = 4.2 37,5 cl bottle (11,0%) @ home as ”The Lost Abbey Cuvee de Tomme.” Vintage 2012 most likely Aroma has licorice and some ripe fruits. Liquor-like. Flavour has licorice, some cherry-like sourness and liquor. Alcohol is present but does not disturb. Good. 8-3-7-3-16 = 3.7

Pours dark reddish brown with no head. Strong aroma of raisin, dark ripe fruits, tart berries, hints of oak and wood. Taste is complex, heavy and vinous with a lot of dark ripe fruits, tart berries, vanilla, oak, sour cherries and smooth wooden notes. Finish is long lasting, sweetish and malty with a lot of tart berries, smooth bourbon, vanilla, oak and wood. Vinous and complex, but extremely well balanced and tasty sour ale. Excellent beer.

On tap at Brouwer's Caf� for Big Wood '12, pours a dark, dirty amber brown with a small beige head. Aroma of light vinegar, complex oak barrels and some sour fruits - uber complex. Flavour is insanely complex with loads of oak barrel complexity, varied soured fruits, just the right amount of vinegar - oh man. Sours have never been my thing, but damn, this is insanely complex and highly drinkable. Finishes oaky, vinegary and barely sour. I had to go back for another full glass and still craved more. Phenomenal stuff - as of this review, this is the best sour I've had.
