Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle 750ml.Clear dark black colour with a large, frothy - creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, smoke, iodine, light to moderate yeasty. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, yeasty, phenol notes. IMO a bit Belgium Imp.Stout alike ! Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20110918]

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a huge a dark brown head. The has notes of caramel, chocolate, and soy sauce. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, sweet and roasted malt, wood, and ashes, leading to a dry roasted and woody finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of blutt59. Pours a pitch black with a dissipating light brown head. Heavy roasty, peppery aroma. Solid body, sweet roastiness, friendly phenols and quite some chocolate. Heavy booze in the finish. Not the most sophisticated of Imperial Stouts. There’s an odd Belgian feel to this. 180911

Big thanks to markwise for sharing with me my first Jester King experience. It pours deep darkness with full mocha head. The aroma is rich chocolate covered marshmallow, chocolate covered black licorice, black strap molasses, uber rich butter dark chocolate fudge goodness. Damn, what? The taste is chocolate toffee like love followed by burnt malts, rich dark roasted coffee and sticky expensive rich chocolate infused fatty Irish Butter enhanced fudge that’s covered with molasses. It seems to have a somewhat thin prickly mouth feel that distracts from the experience a bit. But overall all this is WOW!

bottle from a trade pours thick black with a medium tan head that laces well. Aroma is molasses and roast with earthy tobacco and leather. Flavor is semi-sweet cocoa and bitter espresso with a big roast and burnt sugar in the finish. Really dries out. Nice stuff.

Bottle thanks to Sarah! Pours a black with a creamy brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of roasted malt with some creamy chocolate and a bit of backing dark grains. Flavor is creamy with chocolate and dark grains backed by a bit of roast. Really nice on the tongue.

Bottle. Pours black. Dark brown head. Good lacing. Nose of roast chocolate malts, vanilla beans and rich dark coffee. Lots of mocha. Taste is medium to full bodied. Rich and deep chocolate, coffee roast, vanilla beans, chalk and ash.

Dark greige head over jet-black beer. Coffee, black chocolate, roasted barley - serious stuff. Cigarette ash, coffee dredges; finish is sweet coffee, served with black chocolate and a dash of mole sauce. Alcohol very present in the finish. Very thick, viscous, voluptuous MF; warming alcohol. Very good Imperial Stout. Txs to the Dewberries!

75 cL bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted dark malty and breadish. Fruity and dark smoked malty. Sweet and dry caramelish. Sweet and dark malty finish.

Bottle at CaptainCougar’s local tasting, thanks! Very dark brown, small brown head. Aroma of chocolate and dark roasted coffee. Taste s smooth dark cocoa, licorice, coffee grounds. Nice.
