Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks beerandbeyond. Opaque black-colored with a big frothy brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, a hint of smoke, some plums, chocolate notes and alcohol. Roasty flavor with chocolate, a bit of fruity notes and alcohol and a dry burnt finish. Full-bodied and a bit over-carbonated.

Black with a small tan head. Weak aroma dominated by green apple, with a bit of licorice and soy sauce. Sweet, roasted flavour, thin and sugary at the same time. Ashy aftertaste

Purchased at West Lakeview Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed while watching the Super Bowl, a great one to have for my 800th rating! Appearance is pitch black, extremely thick, rich fuzzy tan head that can’t be avoided. Aroma of really dark chocolate, coffee, lactose, cocoa. Very nice. Taste is decent, its got a bitterness to it and you can tell lactose was not used, there’s a dark fruit element to it that adds complexity, and retains the aroma like qualities. Pretty good, better impys out there but still good. Artwork earns this one extra points.

750ml bottle pours a totally opaque, viscous black with a creamy beige head. Nose has a lot of cherry cordial, smells like a great bon bon, salty Islay whiskey, chocolate, a little soap, black pepper. Flavor has a lot of black pepper, molasses, like smoke, the whiskey in the flavor comes through more soapy, dark malts, lightly nutty. Flavor has some strong raisin too. Full bodied, oily, thick finish. Too much barrel.
