Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.

Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.

Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.

**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

75cl bottle thanks to Dutchdrebus @ QDT’12. Pitch black opaque color, full sized dense brown head that lasts for a while and leaves a decent lacing. Smell malts, dark and roasted malts, coffee, bitter. Taste malts, dark malts, some chocolate, lightly roasted malts, bitter, lightly some hops. Actually pretty simple (in the sense of: not very complex) but very good taste, absolute great balance and superb taste. Absolutely doesn’t need more complexity. Great soft but suitable carbo, full body.

Aroma of road tar. Very heavily roasted grain, burnt really. Some strange yeast character, which I understand to be an unintentional infection. Black and low carbonation.

750ml bottle

Pours pitch black with a tiny sticky brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and coffee. Taste is quite roasty and slightly sweet with malts and hints of chocolate, coffee and bitter notes. Finish is roasted and salty with some sweetness and alcohol burning through. A bit unbalanced imperial stout.

75 cl bottle, no BBE info
Aroma is roasted with cocoa, smoke and some ash. Flavour is somewhat salty and sweet with ash, smoke and roasted malt. Some coffee in the finish. Sticky palate. Good, although a bit too salty and sweet for my taste.

Bottled at Linköping Beer Expo. Near black, brief head. Aroma of green apples and licorice. Really sweet, full bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Thick and viscous, heavy on caramel and syrup. White pepper finish. The only thing brutal here is the sweetness.

750 ml bottle shared @ The Rover. Pours oily black with a dark chocolate brown head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is sweet with molasses, liquorice, roasted malts, viola, dark bread and alcohol. Taste is very sweet, slightly bitter and slightly metallic with roasted malts, molasses, liquorice fudge, prunes, raisins, dark bread, golden syrup and alcohol. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet and full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with coffee and molasses.

Bottle at Schouskjelleren. Pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee with hints of spices and alcohol. Sweet and creamy with a full body with some a light bitterness. A bit sweet, but a nice imperial stout with nice artwork on the bottle.
