Black Metal, a.k.a. Iron Sword, a.k.a. Blackened Death, a.k.a. Suds of Northern Darkness, a.k.a. El Martillo del Muerte, is a cruel and punishing beer fermented by the sheer force of its awesome will.
Brewed with Hill Country well water, Texas-grown pale malt, British caramel, brown, and chocolate malts, and Belgian candi sugar and fermented in with British yeast. 9.3% alcohol by volume.
Note: This entry is the original Black Metal. Beginning around the time of their first anniversary, Jester King switched to a farmhouse yeast for all of their beers. All ratings after this switch should be entered under the Farmhouse Black Metal Imperial Stout entry. The original Black Metal bottles feature a small sticker on the neck; the Farmhouse Black Metal bottles have the word "Farmhouse" in small print on the label.
**Update** In 2023 Jester King has brought back the original "Farmhouse is Dead, Black Is Back"

Bottle shared at CPK during Paul’s b-day fun. Big thanks to The Peter for busting it out. Pours black-brown with a thick, brown cream head. Nose holds boozy dark malts, modest roast, some burnt wood, a bit of hard alcohol and dark fruits. Big sweet flavor with strong chocolate notes, mild roasted malts, hints of toasted plastic. Medium to full bodied with very high carbonation. Sweet on the finish with big and boozy dark fruits, moderate dark chocolate and restrained roast. Good.

750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany!). Drank while listening to Black Metal, yes, indeed - Lunar Aurora's "Zyklus" album in particular. Pours jet black with a medium brown head. Aroma of very dry cocoa, roasted malt, and some dry red wine notes. Flavour is very dry cocoa, dry roast, subtle red wine notes and more dry biscuity malts. Full-bodied, super dry, chocolatey and slightly sweet - highly drinkable. Delicious.

750ml bottle. Pitch black with small foamy brown lacing head. Intense aroma with roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, a hop note resembling acerb vegetables like spring onion or shallot. Taste repeats the dark flavours, a somewhat mealy touch crops up in between.

Starker, leicht kaffeeartiger Beginn. Süffig, gelungen aromatisch, frisch, gleichzeitig stark – es sind tolle Kombinationen, die hier plötzlich auf einen einwirken. Das Ganze entspannt sich dann etwas, das Bier wirkt geordneter und runder, volle karamelliger Aromen sind vorhanden. Ein tolles Bier! 11/12/11/12/10/12

Bottle shared at Klooster, Delft. Black pour with a beige head. Aroma is licorice, chocolate and coffee. Flavour is roasted, chocolate, licorice and coffee. Body is a little thinner than I would prefer for the style, and carbonation higher. Still a good beer though.

Couldn’t stop laughing at the bottle, sorry. Well, it poured a near-pitch black color with a tan head. Dark chocolate aroma notes, with a touch of roasted malts. Flavor was creamy chocolate with roasted notes. Pretty darn good.

Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, caramel and brown sugar. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long chocolate, roasted malty finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

750 ml bottle. Opaque, black liquid with medium to big, thick tan head. Nice, moccaish head with good lacing. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, dark fruits, fresh coffee, wood and biscuity malt. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter with notes of chocolate and light ash. Quite balanced. Medium to full bodied with nice carbonation. Quite fruity, not as roasted as most imperial stouts. Good brew.

75cl bottle thanks to Dutchdrebus @ QDT’12. Pitch black opaque color, full sized dense brown head that lasts for a while and leaves a decent lacing. Smell malts, dark and roasted malts, coffee, bitter. Taste malts, dark malts, some chocolate, lightly roasted malts, bitter, lightly some hops. Actually pretty simple (in the sense of: not very complex) but very good taste, absolute great balance and superb taste. Absolutely doesn’t need more complexity. Great soft but suitable carbo, full body.
