Overall Impression: Another beer you find in the Saranac mixers, and another decent example of its style...

Bottle from a mixed pack on 02/14/2009. Clear copper amber body with a medium creamy off-white head. Toasty nutty notes with some cheerios. Slight grain, toast and cheerios flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a clear copper with a finger or so of head. Aromas of apple juice with a little bit of hops. Astringent alcohol shines through a lackluster body of caramel malt and spice. This just isn’t a very good ESB.

Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours with a clear, light orange-amber body and a small off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma of corn, light coffee, wheat and bread. Taste is astringent malt and light citrus. Light carbonation and a watery mouthfeel.

12oz bottle-pours a light tan head and dark amber color. Aroma is slightly sweet husky medium malt-caramel/some chocolate, nutty, faint earthy hops. Taste is slightly sweet husky medium malt-caramel/some chocolate, nutty, some metallic/earthy hops. Medium body. A nice beer with 1 main detractor-metallic. Thanks to Joe/jwc215.

SAR ESB S5L4F3T5O10: Smells strong at first but when I pour it into the glass it goes to a mild sweeter olfactory. Looks like a lighter root beer or iced tea. Tolerable sparkling bitterness on the palate. Almost mild yet strong enough to let you know its beer. Decent esb, bitter linger but not over the top. Almost seems mildly chocolaty at times.

Oh, got a green label bottle here, from the Winter Mix Pack, love that pack. So, usually Saranac is good for getting styles without making them overly authentic. Or I can say that in a nice way, Saranac makes styles that are easier for newbies to get used to, no difference with this ESB. Pours a completely clear copper color with a lightly sticky small head that leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is lightly musky and earthy malts, I do get a feeling of damp British weather. Downside is it is slightly vegetal. Taste is similarly malty, lightly earthy and musty with a faint sweet biscuit flavor at the end. All in all a faithful rendition of the style without being \particularly interesting or special. Side note: I have shared this beer with a lot of newbies and many have enjoyed this, so I think Saranac definitely is able to interest the newbies in new styles.

12 ounce bottle from a sampler. Pours a reddish brown color with a one-finger head. Low retention and average lacing. English hop aroma with some malty notes. Tart and nutty taste with some floral hop notes. Medium bodied.

12oz bottle. Brown-orange color, looks filtered. Sweet, fruity malt aroma. Chewy, fruity malt mouthfeel, well balanced by the crisp hoppiness. This is a very nice session beer from Saranac, I remember it making it’s first appearance circa 1999. One for the malt lovers.
