Traditional South German wheat beer features the signature characteristics of banana and clove, both in aroma and flavor. These flavors are produced by the unique German yeast strain used as it plays off of the German wheat used in the brewing.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Cloudy medium orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Nose with potent banana and clove in addition to grassy acidity. Tangy, grassy body with wheat and strong banana and clove esters, finishing bitter and estery. Enjoyable.

5.8% ABV. On draft at brewery. Hazy gold color with thin bright white lasting head. Full hefe aroma that smacks you in the face with wheat, sweet malt and banana. The flavor is right there for a hefe except it seems a tad watery. I taste a really sweet combo of malts and malted wheat plus banana and cotton candy. Tasty hefe. Better consumed on a warm summer day rather than today.

2004 draught. Darker than traditionally is, this one is a rich gold-maize with some light brown hints. Big foamy white head, and a wet, wheaty aroma along with some bubble gum and light clove hints. Flavor has plenty of fresh wheat taste, and there is ample clove and light banana, but instead of finishing crisp, this one finishes a bit too watery. Has a moderately sweet body, but seems a bit too thin. The banana and clove could stand to be more pronounced and even could use some more carbonation.
