A huge malt bill gives this fall seasonal beer its unique canvas. 60 pounds of locally hand picked pumpkin are roasted and glazed with brown sugar and honey in our pub’s pizza oven. The pumpkin flesh (no skin, it adds an astringent bitterness) is added to the mash melding with the already complex grist. American hop varieties provide a formidable bitterness and some great flavor and aroma. At the end of the boil the wort is spiced with ginger, coriander, cinnamon, all spice, nutmeg, and more brown sugar help sculpt this pumpkin beer. After the fermentation the beer spends a little over a week on vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks!

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2015 vintage bottling. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep reddish copper color with a 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of huge pumpkin, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, toasted biscuit, cinnamon, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and pumpkin/spice notes; with great strength. Taste of huge pumpkin, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, toasted biscuit, cinnamon, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spice bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pumpkin, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, toasted biscuit, cinnamon, coriander, ginger, nutmeg, clove, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and pumpkin/spice flavors; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a smooth, moderately creamy/slick, and fairly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a small warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial pumpkin ale. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and pumpkin/spice flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. On initial tasting the spices felt a bit subdued; but once it warmed up there was a really great balance between the malt, pumpkin, and spice flavors. A very enjoyable offering.

From the September 2012 3R6P gathering. +++ Sampled from a growler this beer poured a caramel-amber color with a small soapy beige head that faded quickly and left good lacing. The aroma was sweetish pumpkin pie, faint caramel and pie crust. The flavor was tangy and woody with notes of nutmeg, bread, a bitter middle followed by faint pie crust and pepper. Medium length dry and vaguely spicy finish. Medium body. Eh.

Sample at the Jackie O’s Bottle Sale on 08/27/2011. The beer is a murky brownish-orange color with a medium thin light beige head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet spices, brown sugar and malt. Medium body with a savory blend of spices, most notably cinnamon and nutmeg. Sweet brown sugar and malt in the background. The finish is sweet with a lingering pumpkin pie aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Draft. Pours clear orange. Nose and taste of pumpkin cake, nutmeg, brown sugar, pie crust, cinnamon, all spice and ginger crisp. One of the best pumpkin beers I’ve ever had.

Sampled from the tap at the brewery during the 5th anniversary party. Poured a hazy reddish amber with a gray head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was dominated by cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar with a pumpkin backing. Flavor had a pumpkin note at the start but was quickly overtaken by cardamon, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar.
