Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Draft @ Portsmouth Brewery as “Finest Kind” Hazy orange color with creamy white head, lacing was decent. Hoppy aroma with peach and grass. Great caramel malt based with grapefruit and flowers. The finish has a long-lasting bitterness to it with a sharp citrus tartness. To really sum this up-- this is a solid IPA and it would please any IPA drinker. It is a bit on the rough side however, that is how the brewer intended it to be.

Bottle, 12oz, at Mikkeller. It’s almost clear, with a golden-orange color and a dense, off-white head of two-finger size. Some yeast floaties. Pale malts with a weak flowery and grassy touch on the nose. Some pine cones too. The flavor is malty and lightly sweetish, a touch of alcohol kicks in and blends with pine cones, some freshly mown grass, and then there’s of course a balancing bitterness. Dry, smooth and medium bodied, and a lasting finish. A rather ordinary IPA, but well brewed and probably a winner with BBQ. 110528

Sampled @ SBWF 2011 on September 29. Pours hazy orange with a white head. Smell is rather light with some malt and ash in it. Taste is fruity and fresh from the American hops. There are clear citrus notes. Bitterness is prominent and the beer has a rather dry taste and finish.

From notes. 12oz bottle from Old Chicago poured into a shaker. Pours a light orange almost dark amber. Small bit of white head. Aroma is solid hops. Strong floral notes. Taste is medium bitter. It has a medium body with a creamy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, this beer is damn good. It tastes like hops and that is what I want my IPA to taste like. Will definitly find a 6pack of this stuff to buy before I leave town.

Solid, drinkable IPA but not terribly exciting. Caramel malt flavor with a good dose of grapefruit and pine hops. Solid sudsy feel. Golden orange color with a nice head.

12 oz bottle. Pours golden with an off-white head and lots of debris. Floral and citrus aromas. Flavor has more pine and floral flavors, some grapefruit against a biscuit base. Just decent.

Color little bit better than standard. Great picture on bottle. Fine smell, could be a little more hoppy.

Very nice IPA. Look at the bottle: great picture on it. Lovely colour in my opinion, great hoppy smell and nice hoppy taste. Could be a bit more extreme, but still it’s very nice.

Grasiger, deutlich herber Hopfenantrunk. Gut! 8/10/11/12/6/11
