Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle: Hazy, deep golden coloured, small and stable off-white head; initial caramelly fruitiness is followed by a mild, but distinctive dry herbal hoppiness; dry moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied, quite soft; lingering dry spicy-hoppy finish. A goody, no doubt, but not great......

355ml bottle. Pours orange with a large head. Aroma is some orange hops with a little pine. Taste starts bitter with some creamy malt. Strong bitter finish. Less hop flavour just really bitter. Maybe an oldish bottle but I’m loving it.

[Courtesy of haakonmoen] Pours clear orange with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, grape and apricot. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Amber with a slight white head and moderate carbonation. Hoppy, citrus and pine aroma with some apricot jam and doughy malts. Full, prickly mouth feel with a solid malt back bone, juicy hops and a dry finish with a touch of spruce. Very good.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, amber colour with a light-beige and short foamy head. Slightly bready caramel-malty aroma with herbal and spicy hops. Bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a dry and moderately carbonated mouthfeel. Cara-malty taste with a good dash of noble hops, which are herbal, spicy and delicately fruity; dry and bitter finish with a lasting hopy aftertaste. Solid brew. 23.III.11

On tap at Deep Ellum, Boston, Mass last October. An amber coloured pour with a smallish white head on top. Good hoppy, citrus fruit aroma. Tastes hoppy, crisp, slightly sweet/bitter. Good balanced American IPA, I could session on this.

12 oz. bottle @ Beer Temple (had it on tap there too, about a year ago?). Big creamy head with lacing. Light orange colored. Smells really weird, earthy, vegetal, herbal, a little (dark) malt. Once in the mouth is where it happens, lots of bittering hops, bitter flavor, a little bit acidic even. Medium bodied. Long bitter finish. apart from the smell: enjoyable.
