Smoked Barleywine Ale. Our newest brewer, Dave Kilgour was backed into a corner at the Manly Men Beer club meeting. The club members demanded an English style barleywine ale brewed with a dose of new world style smoked grain. His second task was to come up with a name for a smokey beer brewed in the shadow of Maine’s cool ocean waters. Here in Maine, sea smoke is a fog that appears in bitter cold air just above the water’s surface as it meets the relatively warmer ocean water. Thus, rising columns of condensing water vapor are formed, appearing to be wispy fog on an otherwise clear winter’s morning.
Given this image, Dave set out to craft a brew with the enchantment and ruggedness of Maine’s winter waters. Brewed with cherry wood smoked barley, this ale attains the subtle warmth of a barleywine ale without being overbearing. The introduction of the smoked flavor acts to balance the sweetness inherent in the barley-wine style yielding a quirky, yet sophisticated beer.

Bomber bottle, 2013 vintage. Pours a dirty orange color without head. Aroma is interesting, smoked apples, light figs and prunes.... Old English toffee.
I prefer my barely wines slightly oxidized, but I should have been more careful with this one at only 7.7%. The thinner body does don’t help as it ages. Molasses, caramel with a hint of smoke. The finish displays dark fruit. The smoke is mild but really all the flavors are. Meh

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 12/28/11
Aroma: The nose is fairly light, some yeast, a little spice, some malts, and notes of smoke
Appearance: It pours a rather cloudy orange-brown color, with a beige head and streaky lace
Flavor: The taste is pretty much on the malty side, smoke is fairly subtle, and basically no bitterness
Palate: The body light-medium, with an average-to-soft carbonation, and it has a fairly short duration
Overall Impression: This beer was alright, but it wasn't what the label had lead me to believe that I would be getting, because the smoke was actually pretty reserved. Still though, the beer was rather drinkable, but it just didn't completely live up to my hopes.

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Off-white head quickly recedes to skim surface leaving spot lacing. Sweet smoked caramel aromas. Soft with sweet, thick caramel upfront turning to smoked hickory before the lasting resin finish. Becomes cloying over time.

Another big thanks to jcwattsrugger here, thanks John. Pours deep copper with off white head. The aroma is muted cherry, some mild malts and subtle – smooth dry bacon smokiness with pine hops and booziness around the edges. The taste offers up firm rauch malts and dry smoked bacon goodness. Behind the veil of smokiness are notes of sweet malts, pine hops and a sliver of sweet dark fruitiness. It leaves ample amounts of smoky rauch bacon into the after taste. Nice stuff that doesn’t over power with its smoke or barleywine essence.
