Bottle pours a light orange amber with a small white head. No real lacing. Aroma is a smoked bacon flavor. Seriously...it smells like BACON. Not sure if beer is suposed to smell like this. But its good. Flavors are smokey and meaty. That the best I can describe it. Just not sure a beer should taste like that. Smoked Salmon. Delicious but wierd. 2004 bottle from Eyedrinkale. Pours a deep bronze, auburn and golden color, hazy and bottle conditioned apparently. Huge white head. Aroma of charred paper, smoked salmon, burnt grease, light spiciness from the yeast and a firm sweet malt. Flavor is superbly smokey at the start, with a nice even applewood smoked bacon. Immediately following this are some crisp moderately bitter hops. Wow, that caught me by surprise, I didnt smell any hops. Adds a nice layer and then we get the sweet honey and nut malt. Caramel and dough mix together with the smoke to create a full flavor. Body is medium-full. If you think the smoke dominates this one, you’d be outraged at Aecht Schlenkerla. In my opinion, the smoke does not dominate this one at all. I like to taste the smoke up front and throughout, which you can, but there is ample sweet malt to balance it and a moderate dose of alcohol on the finish. The alcohol is probably a bit overdone, and the malt gets quite sweet and strong as this has warmed, but all in all, this is very well-made. Strikes a balance somewhere between Spezial Rauchbier Lager, Christoffel Blonde and St Georgenbrau Kellerbier.

This well carbonated brew jumps to a full head of foam as soon as it’s poured. No coaxing necessary. Light amber color with a touch of haze. The aroma is of light malt, and just a touch of smoke. The flavor is sweet, with a smoky bitterness that follows through to the finish. Lacks true Bock character.

Seriously cool - I’m very pleased with this beer as just about the only American beer I’ve had to attempt to take on Schlenkerla rauchbier urbock -not to mention it compares favorably. It was a foamer and that worried me, but I detected no signs of bacteria. Very cloudy amber color, lots of suspended yeast. Campfire/wood smoke and smoked meat is predominant, layers of melanoidiny munich malts provide a caramelly cookieish base. Very good stuff.

An unclear red beer with a small disappearing orange head. The aroma is of smoke, wood, peat, and rope - a great aroma. The flavor is very dry and yet sweet with notes of smoke, rope, peat, and hints of lemon. The alcohol runs over the tongue.

They must have put a heaping heling of smoked malts in this sucker - there is a big time smokey presence that reminds me of some of the Orkney products I've tried - I was extremely put off by it in those beers, but in this beer, after a while, the presence doesn't seem so extreme - as a bock, this is pretty tasty, and the smoked aspect, once it starts to grow on you, adds an interesting element to the beer - heavyweight certainly makes some unique beers, and this is yet another example of that.

Amber w/ slight haze. Fresh Vienna (actually it's actually Munich but I guess he went easy on it) malt & beech smoke aroma. Drips with smoke, some woody notes...caramel & vienna malts (which I suppose put together does sort of equal Munich - I should have put that together). Dry finish. Moderately sweet middle (hops add earthy context but little bitterness). Hints of alcohol in the finish.
