holy hell, a brown ale? this beer is black! If i didnt know i would think this is a porter. Very small beige head, a slightly fruity aroma, with some roasted malt, and a touch of hops. Smoky flavour, more roasted malt, and some nice hops in the finish. Smooth in the end, wow, i’m very impressed! I’ve had a few of this breweries beers, and they are pretty subpar, but this is very nice.

Bottle from the Beer Store. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a minimal beige head that leaves nice lace. Nose is chocolate and roasted nuts. There is some bitterness that keeps this from being too sweet. Mouth is medium with average carbonation. Slight metallic taste in the finish.

Originally rated August 2004. Poured a deep amber colour with a beautiful creamy beige head that settled quickly. Left a small amount of lacing. Smelt malty with hints of molasse and tuna (yes... tuna - I know that does not sound pleasant, but it did not ruin the nose). The flavour was matly caramel / coffee with a smooth bitter start and a dry finish. Beats the hell out of Newcastle’s english brown ale.

The Beer Store 500ml can ($2.65): Pours a dark brown color with a tannish head. Aroma is mostly roasted malt. Taste is a little bit sweet. Finish is not so great; it is a little metallic and watery. A tiny bit of hops are present. Mostly just malty. Feels kind of light. Ok.

500ml can, found somewhere in the cold climes of Ottawa. Hey, I’m from further north, so all the cold-weather paranoia really doesn’t mean much to me. Minus eight? Shorts and sleeves weather!! I think this one is a four for appearance, the head is good and the body is a solid dark brown-burgundy hue. The aroma is all simple malts, nothing exciting. The flavour is much the same - malty flavours all over the place, watery finish. No complexity, no enticing mouthfeel. A shame, really - this could have (and -should- have) been much better.

A little bitter, a touch of sourness. Certainly decent, and leaves a nice finish.

Canette 473ml.
