Society & Solitude #03

Picked up at Hill Farmstead on 4-21. Put it in the fridge. Poured into an HFS glass on 4-23.

A - Poured beautifully. Half a finger cream colored head with some decent head lacing. The bubbles stuck around for a while. The beer is a beautiful orange gold color SRM of 3 with lots of clouds / haze in the glass. Really spectacular looking.

S - Shaun was right. Totally an Imperial Harlan by scent. Really nice hop profile that fills the nostrils. Ruby red grapefruit, nectarine and other great citrus scents. Hints of lemon as well with a wee bit of honey. Just the right amount of hoppiness.

T - Heavenly. Very few beers taste like they smell. Very rich grapefruit juice, tangerines and some melon. Great hop finish that covers the tongue and stays around for a while.

M - 95% carbonation on the mouth swish, medium body and very dry finish. Carbonation is almost champagne-like.

O - Society 2 was my favorite black IPA. Society 3 may be my favorite Double IPA. Another fantastic tasting beer from Shaun Hill. The only thing wrong with it is the lack of it being on tap at my house to drink every night.

750mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany!), pours a cloudy orangey yellow with a medium white head. Aroma is very piney and floral hop-heavy, with truckloads of piney hops and balanced doughy malt to back. Flavour begins exceedingly piney, with loads of resinous and floral hops as well, some citrus and grapefruity in there as well. The malt backing isn't obvious from the flavour, but the palate is quite thick and chewy for a Double IPA. Finishes dry, with loads of piney and some herbal (a bit pot-like) hops. Absolutely beautiful.

Growler @ Dans house, courtesy of glouglouburp. Huge thanks! Pours a hazy, light, bright, golden orange appearance with a nice white head that doesn’t have the best retention. Huge piney, ganja, somewhat resiny hoppy aroma. Somewhat sweet grapefruit citrusy, big piney, ganja, sticky hoppy flavor with a fairly piney aftertaste. Great beer.

Growler shared by Steve. Cloudy yellowish orange with white head. Nose/taste of citrus, tropical fruits, malt, yeast, fresh grapefruit and lemony bread. Medium body.

A hazed amber ale with a thin creamy frothy off white head. In aroma, classic Hill pungent hops, catty and smooth, orange pulp, a bit of Brett notes. In mouth, biscuit malt with piney hops, catty notes, citrus pulp, beautiful. On tap at Three Penny Taproom, April 6, 2012.
