2007 Bottle, courtesy of drewbeerme. Pours an orangish-tinted brown with a small head. Amazingly strong and good aroma of caramel, chocolate, citrus and mint. Nice balance of hops and malt in the taste. Medium body. ’Tis most excellent!

2007 Bottle:
Deep ruby tinted amber with a nice sized tan head that fades, but leaves a nice residue in the glass. Aroma of strong oak, vanilla, yeast, malt, toffee, raisins, cherries and even a tiny bit of chocolate...oh yeah, and tons of alcohol too! Full-bodied; Strong spicey pit fruits up front dance around the hops and malt, but leave plenty of sweetness behind. Aftertaste shows mainly of some piney hops along with the ever-present alcohol and a good dose of caster sugar on top of the other fruits. Overall, a very good and complex barleywine that develops well in the mouth, yet shows some subtle fruits near the end. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from West LakeView Liquors in Chicago, Illinois on 16-February-2008.

2007 vintage courtesy of Gillard. Pours hazy copper with lasting tan head. The aroma is nice and hoppy with pine hops and fur tree followed by sweet mildly roasty malts and hints of caramel. The taste starts hoppy and earthy and a tad thin. The hops come off as pine, grassy, resiny and earthy bitterness. Wow, lots of hops. By midway the sweet malts peak in intensity but quickly get overtaken by pine and grassy hop bitterness that run right into the after taste. Darn smooth really but would benefit from several more years of aging.

2005 vintage. It pours a hue darker than the ’06 with an even bolder tan head. The aroma is much more barleywine like with a suitable level of dark fruity esters to break up the once hop dominated nose. I also get a just noticeable caramel note. The taste is richer with a bit more malt caramel notes and dark fruity esters. The hops are still over powering. I think this will be excellent in a couple more years. I now wish I had another bottle.

Bottle... yellow wax. This thing has sat around very patiently waiting and it’s time has finally arrived. As it pours I start to pick up some of the sweet malt aroma and a whiff of brandy-like alcohol. Closer inspection and a little patience reveal a fairly dark brown body with some reddish highlights and a one finger tan head that has fled the scene fairly quickly. Aromas are of brandy, wine, brown sugar and some fig and date fruit. A touch of pine hops are there, too... This is very good, but my first thoughts are that I should have aged it a little longer to see if that hops bite would die back a bit. It has the lovely sweet and sticky malt body, but transitions into an alcoholic warmth and a hops blast that smacks of grapefruit peels and pine needles. This is silly good.

Bottle (2007 release) from EithCubes - Thanks Mike! Pours a dark copper with a modest beige head. Aroma is instantaneous and rich with sweet, sugary caramel malts, citrus, and pine. Tastes ever so smooth with tones of piney and citrus notes, caramel, brown sugar, and hints of bubble gum. Delightfully creamy palate and overall smooth easy drinker. Damn this is good.

Thin offwhite head. Hazy amber body. Catty tropical fruit hop aroma with firm malty background. Intense sweet catty mango and tropical fruit taste with powerful roasty firm malt character. Sharp roasty tropical fruit hop aftertaste. Notes of rye. Oily mouthfeel. (0.7something bottle at Knut Albert’s.)

22 oz bottle purcahsed mail order about a year ago from Archer in Chicago. Purple wax, 2008 Vintage. Pour is hazy cloudy orange golden, pretty settling builds up a one inch off white head that falls with nice splotchy lacing. A bunch of carbonation streaking to the surface. Aroma of soft caramel, dense, layered resiney hops. Some tangerine citrus bitterness in there as well. Really inviting and full nose. Some yeast grassiness too. Taste is initially pretty sharp pine and citrus bitterness. Behind that is the sweet caramel and fruit, though the sweetness cloys a bit. Honey and grassy, some alcohol heat behind that. I was expecting this to be a bit softer and more melded based on the nose. Palate is medium, fair carbonation - alcohol present in the long dry finish. Overall, really nice, but highlight was the nose. 9,5,7,3,16 (4.0)

Enjoyed at the csbosox tasting 7/3 courtesy of tjthresh. 2005 Vintage. Pour is reddish orange with pretty much no head. Aroma is deep sweet maltiness with a little bit of hop presence. Taste is more of the same, nice and sweet malt with hoppiness throughout. Very tasty, and very well structured. Alcohol was present, though didn’t overpower me. Thanks for breaking this one out Tom. 8,5,8,3,16 (4.0)
