18th March 2014: Hopping Pig, San Diego, on-tap. I am not a smoked beer fan even though I love Bamberg. I am not a chilli beer fan even though I love chillies in my food. I ordered it for the novelty and I didn’t like it. This smoked ’Stout’? Just wasn’t for me, the Rye didn’t help either. I can see the attraction of this beer to some but it was a ’Bridge too far’ for my taste buds. I’ve tried to score it objectively, but it sat on a flight with three other beers that I really enjoyed tasting.

Bottle. Pours reddish very dark brown with tan head. Nose and taste of smoked rye, roast chocolate, chili pepper, ash, vanilla and dried smoked bacon. Finishes with some moderate pepper heat. Lots of roast. Medium body. Best beer I’ve had from them. Solid brew.

Courtesy of hellbilly. Pours up with an amber body supporting a tan colored head of foam. The aroma has sweet malts, sweet apple esters, some chili pepper notes and a mild level of smooth smoke. The taste delivers sweet fruity esters, sweet malts and then a firm level of chili pepper notes and chili pepper heat. In between those notes are smooth smoky bacony goodness. I noticed that after a few quaffs the chili heat spreads harmlessly to the lips. Nice stuff.

Bomber from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Pours very dark brown with a monolayer of tan that left rapidly. Aroma of smoked malt. Can’t make out rye. LIght pepper aroma. Full bodied. Boy this stuff has some pepper, and now I get the smoked rye. Brewer should either get a medal or be arrested for tongue abuse. I highly recommend the experience.
