We're best known for brewing aggressive, big-character beers, but we love a great sessionable ale as much as anyone. Most beers at the less-weighty end of the spectrum lack flavor and depth as much as they lack high ABVs, but not Stone Levitation Ale! This deep amber brew has a rich maltiness, big hoppy character, citrus overtones, and an impressively modest alcohol content for a beer with so much flavor packed into it.

Interesting. Looks like a nice amber ale, but tastes something like an IPA. Pours a nice deep brown with little to no head. Flavors are a bit citrusy, a bit grassy, with a definite touch of hop bite and bitterness. Not my favorite beer ever, but not bad.

Bottle @ Hotelroom, Denver. Pours dark golden with a huge offwhite head, sprinkling bubbles and fragments of yeast showing. Aroma of caramel, pine, sweet fruit and sour cream !. Taste is grapefruit, yeast, citrus. Thin to medium body, soft carbonation. Looks and smells better than the it tasted. Drinkable, but not really a great beer. Sorry, but im proberly not worthy. 070311

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark orange colour, large off-white head. Nose has caramel, citric hops, fruits. Flavour is caramel malts, fruity, some citrus, resin. Well drinkable.

Exploded upon opening and spewed carbonation for a few minutes. Chewy toffee coloured body with a tan head of large bubbles and a bunch of bubbles rising from the bottom - way too much head obviously with a bit too much carbonation - i’m guessing...not cool. Aroma of bread, yeast, a touch of hops, malt and a largely mild and unimpressive smell. Light-bodied; Sharp hoppiness up front with a pungent bite, followed up with metallic and a cheesy taste. Aftertaste shows nothing but hops - no malt backbone, no sweetness and nothing too pleasant. Overall, this is an overcarbonated, overhopped, undermalted, simple beer that is good when you compare it to a typical amber, but doesn’t really fit in the style - it’s more of an IPA, and it’s a bad example of one. Not really worth sampling, but people will still do it, just because its from Stone. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 20-July-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 17-December-2010.

Bottle from UTO Beer, London. Pours amber with a shortlasting head. Aroma of caramell malt. Lots of hops in the taste. Some resemblance with BrewDog Nanny State, with the thin body and lots of malt, like in that one it actualy works here.

Bottle. Deep translucent orange-red body, medium-thin tight clumping buff head. Piny, toasty nose with bitter citrus rind. Bitter body, spicy, floral, and piny, backed by toasty malts. A bouquet of hops with just enough malt balance, quite nice.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 9 Oct 2010) Reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, hoppy nose with caramel, black-currant, pine needles and grapefruit. Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of black-currant, pine needles and grapefruit. Fairly bitter finish. Light body, with balanced sweetness. Generous hop character, but a bit thin on the malt side. Nice beer.

Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival. Clear nut brown, firm head. Grapefruity nose. Mid sweet, light bodied with elastic rounded mouthfeel. Grapefruity and lightly nutty. Somewhat resiny bitterness. A bit too light in body to fit the typical Stone character.

[355ml bottle from Beers of Europe] Red-brown with a large beige head and a prickly little hint of carbonation. Pine aroma continues into the flavour. There’s some sharp, pithy grapefruit too and a long, dry, bitter finish with sweet, juicy fruits bursting in the back of your mouth and a spicy tingle on your tongue. The pine re-erupts from the throat some time later. Nice. Really nice. Only let down was the occassional and very slight hint of metals.

Bottle, 10C. Amber, small beige head. Smells of slightly singed caramel under grapefruit, pine and pepper. Light body with pleasingly fat caramel under solid bitterness. Finish has some wood with the citrus. No great complexity, just lovely ringing flavours.
