May is a time for palate cleansing. Stepping past the heavier flavors appealing in the dead of winter, we arrive at the sprightlier flavors of spring and summer. In our attempt to rejuvenate, we interpreted Chef Paul Liebrandt’s mid-course of green apple wasabi sorbet as a sour ale. Pureed green apples from France are added to the fermentation in order to define the familiar acidity of a lactic sour, then the beer is “dry-hopped” on fresh wasabi roots. In Intermezzo, sweet and piquant whiffs of real wasabi cleanse the bright tartness of green apple while the nutty finish of the kernel of pale malt is left to eradicate winter’s weight. Drink Intermezzo because it is time to refresh.

Five Boro Craft Beer Fest. Pours yellow. Apple, bit earthy, tart apple. Medium body. Don't really get any of the wasabi, just a lot of quite unpleasant apple notes.

Draft with James and GOTC. Pours cloudy yellow with white head. Nose and taste of lactose, wasabi, banana, wheat malt and Parmesan cheese. Lighter medium body.

A hazed blonde ale with no head. In aroma, strange mix of sour lemons and light bilous notes, a bit of rotten veggies. In mouth, a sweetish and sour ale with epsom salts and light peppery notes, probably from wasabi.

At the stagshead sour night this is what I was most excited to try and am still sad because of it. Pours ugly looks like peach juice if i had to describe. The smell is the worst mostly bile/vomit. The taste isn’t that bad i don’t get wasabi but some green apples, sweet tarts, leaves, and citrus. The issue is it smells so bad that it makes it hard to take sips. I really enjoyed Cartons other offerings but big miss

Blind Tiger, NY tap ($7.50): Pours pale, cloudy, yellow with a white head. Aroma is green apple and vinegar... a very familiar aroma, but not so much in beer. Taste is slightly sour. Kind of tastes like sour apple candy, but more organic like. Easy-drinking and refreshing. Kind of weird.
