The 7.5% ABV 22oz bomber pours with a crystal clear gold body that supports a tall nearly tight light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up some shallow resiny hop notes, mild grapefruit citrus hops, a bit of mango fruitiness and then some sweet malts and a few slivers of buttery diacetyl. The taste is similar with bitter grapefruit like citrus hops and some mango tropical fruit swimming in some sweet maltiness. To midway it gets a little diacetyl like as the resiny pine hops surge forward. Nice hoppy bitter IPA but the slim buttery notes get in the way slightly. OK stuff.

Crisp copper coloured body with a clear copper and orange glow and a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of fresh hops, resin, alcohol, pine and a good dose of malt - noticeable, sticky and sweet, as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive grapefruity and very piney flavoured hops up front with a resin finish and a deep almost nutty flavour with a good amount of malt and a subdued pineapple and passionfruit sweetness at the end. Aftertaste is quite bitter, but nice - the flavours show well and are dominated by the hops then the malt, then the bitterness - not much sweetness or fruits to savour in this one. Overall, a good IPA, not stellar or as good as I expected with this score...still great to try on the other side of this country. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 02-May-2013 for US$6.99 sampled at home in Washington on the first day of government shutdown here in the city on 01-October-2013.

Bottle, 22oz. A clear one, golden in color and with a finger-thick white head. The aroma has peaches and pine cones, feeling quite sugary. Sweet flavor with enough bitterness to deal with it, and there’s also peach notes and pine cones. The flavor is pretty much the same, with pine cones and peaches. Maltyness too. Full body and pleasant carbonation. Lasting finish. A nice one, that’s for sure, but it’s nothing more. 130804

Bottle 650ml @ Hotel Room, Hotel Whitcomb, San Francisco, CA
Pours clear deep golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, grape and pine. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium to heavy bitter with a long caramel and dry bitter finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.

Pours brownish burnt orange. Looks filtered, quite transparent. Bone white head, about medium-sized. Good lacing and retention. Aroma is a split of crystal malt and sort of middle of the road American hop character. The hops are heavy on orange and pine flavor with a minty herbal twist. There’s a fair bit of caramel and malty sweetness. The taste is fairly sweet. There’s some initial orange-pine hoppiness, but once the bitterness kicks in, the hop character gets rather bland. Too much caramel. Messy sweetness. Pine resin bitter finish with more crystal maltiness. Carbonation is pretty average. There’s some nice hop oiliness. It’s not a bad IPA, just a boring one. There’s too much malt character with too much crystal malt. The hop aroma is boring compared to so many other beers, and the hop taste strays far too much into bland bitterness. Fairly disappointing.

75 IBU. "A full-bodied India style Pale Ale, Knee Deep IPA is brewed with six malts and four hop varieties, delivering a smooth finish and mild bitterness, balanced with an intense piney and floral aroma." Bomber from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours clear brilliant copper with a creamy off-white head. Don’t know about pine and floral, but I think it smells like a cat peed on a pine tree. ("Cascade, Columbus, Magnum, Chinook") Full bodied. Now there’s resin for sure, but I still thinks there’s a lot of citrus in here. Gives a good hop burn in the mouth. We’re talking NW style here. There is a fairly mild and smooth caramel backbone, but this is all about the hop. Finishes hoppy and bitter. Damn tasty ale.
