Pours hazy mahogany into a snifter. Mocha head with little retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Dark cocoa, dried pit fruit and marshmallow aromas. Soft with dark caramel and pit fruit upfront turning to chocolate and oak in before the lasting marshmallow mocha finish.

Sample at Brews Cafe. Hazy dark amber-gold color with a medium thin white head that dissipates steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of oak, dark fruit and spice. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, earthy yeast, oak and dark fruits. The finish is oaky and fruity and spicy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

750 ml bottle into snifter; no bottle dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, raisin, cherry, fig, date, brown sugar, chocolate, nuttiness, tannic red wine, vanilla, oak, leather, tobacco, musty funk, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity/funky yeast, and oak/cocoa notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, raisin, cherry, plum, fig, date, brown sugar, chocolate, nuttiness, tannic red wine, vanilla, oak, leather, tobacco, musty funk, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast/oak earthiness. Some light earthy yeast spice and slight tannic tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown bread, raisin, cherry, plum, fig, date, brown sugar, chocolate, nuttiness, red wine, vanilla, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, balance, and robustness of dark/bready malt, fruity/funky yeast, and oak/cocoa flavors; with a great yeast/malt/oak balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, fairly creamy, and slightly tart/tannic mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible old ale style! All around fantastic complexity and balance of dark/bready malt, fruity/funky yeast, and oak/cocoa flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

750 c&c from Bine & Vine. Pours lightly ruddy dark brown with a foamy beige head. Aroma is brett tinged treacle with moderately dark fruit and a whole lot of mysterious stuff. I call complex. Med body, about. Flavor is cocoa, treacle, bourbon (or wood?), rinse, repeat. Thereβs a slighty sour/brett chocolate - if such is conceivable in reality. The flavor impact is relatively mild, but way off the normal charts. Keeps coming back cocoa - slightly different than chocolate. Very slightly. This stuff is amazing, thereβs no real heat impact, and the impression is as subtle as a 4 lb. hammer to the head. Or like a light waft of chocolate on the air in a Bruges cafe. Wow.

On tap at Rattle N Hum, New York, NY. A dark red/amber coloured pour with virtually no head. Malty, caramel aroma. Tastes similar, malty, caramel, dark fruit, slight sweetness and slightly boozy. Nice one.

On tap at Unoβs. Hazy dark golden brown. Brief beige head. Rich dark fruit malt nose. Flavor is complex dark malt with notes of plums, raisins, oak, vanilla and milk chocolate. Warming mouthfeel with sticky notes. Rich and complex. Slight Brett character, though not dominant. I love this. Could be even better with some age. Finish is cloying and bittersweet. Delicious!

Tap at Republic uptown. Light red color in the dimly lit bar. Aroma is mostly brett. Some cherry in the aroma and flavor.dry and yeasty flavor with mildly bitter finish. I wonder if it would get sour with some age.
