Fermented for more than 18 months in isolation from the rest of the beers, The Dissident is a distinctive Oud Bruin, Flanders-style brown ale, with a fruity aroma and flavor, the first wild yeast beer made by the award-winning Deschutes Brewery. To give The Dissident its characteristic sour taste the brewery used a wild yeast strain called Brettanomyces (also known as Brett) during fermentation. Known throughout the wine world for creating earthy undertones found in many European wines, Brett is used in the beer fermentation process to create strong flavors typically associated with Belgian beers. Unlike English varieties that use traditional inoculated yeasts in the fermentation process, beers made with Brett take much longer to ferment and require additional barrel finishing time to balance the sour flavoring. In the Dissident’s case, this meant aging a portion of it in pinot and cabernet barrels for over 3 months. Another key flavor component comes from the Central Washington cherries that were added twelve months ago.

2010, 10.5%. Cloudy reddish brown, with a large off white head. The aroma right off the bat is funk! Some big lambic style barnyard aromas, wet hay, with alot of vinegar, sour cherries, earthy wood, overly ripe fruit, and lactic overtones. Solid mouth feel, good carb, surprisingly good carb considering the beer is 5 years old. The finish is sour, and funk, with big sour cherries, and general soured fruit. Big wet hay, and lambic style funk. Great stuff.

22 ounce waxed and capped bottle from Tavour. 2015 Reserve. 11.1% ABV. Slightly hazed amber brown color. Small creamy beige cap. Aroma of earthy funk, toasted malt and dark cherries. Flavor is an interesting combination of aged oak, dark cherries, Bretty funk and warming alcohol. There is an underlying sweetness throughout. Slightly tart, vinous and dry on the backend. Quite unique and a huge departure from Deschutes.

Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown from a bottle. Nice big cherry and woody dark fruit aroma, some oak, estery yeast. Similar flavor. Very good beer.

I remember when this beer didnt suck, but had the 2015 version in 2020 and it should have held up well. Instead it was a sweet sugary mess. No balance. Only positive thing was the ABV was well hidden. Had a hard time drinking a glass of this. Total drainpour.

2017 Bottle. Clear mid-brown with a cream head that fades to a cm then is just lacing. 3+ Aroma of bread, cherries, autumnal fruits, wine vinegar. Creamy texture. Sour but also really quite sweet with sweet cherries and marzipan, low bitterness, gentle oak. Simpler than the aroma suggested. Hard to believe it's 10.5% ABV (or that there's so much residual sweetness).

Thanks Walt for sharing! Taster showing medium amber with a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows moderately intense notes of apple juice and malt. The palate is lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Moderately sweet and lightly tart with light notes of malt.

Bottle from mashmaster, thanks! Reddish brown color. Vinous aroma with caramel, cherries, marzipan. Malty, fairly alcoholic, quite oaky flavor with hints of marzipan and cherries. Sour with caramelly and coffee notes. Horseblanket. A good complexity, but just lacking a bit in balance. Nevertheless a great beer.
