(Cask at Old Fountain, Old Street, London, 27 Apr 2013) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, fruity, hoppy nose with coffee, chocolate, caramel, pine needles and hints of tropical fruit. Malty, fruity taste with notes of caramel, coffee, chocolate, pine needles, grapefruit, resin, raisins and a generous resinous/piney bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Surprisingly well balanced and drinkable. Very nice.

330ml bottle from Ales by Mail

Pours dark brown, almost black with a large foamy head. Aroma of roasty malts, exotic fruits and hints of citrus. Taste is smooth, and quite a nice mix of roastiness and exotic fruitness with a touch of salty licorice and grassy hops. Finish is dry and fruity with lots of roastiness and salty licorice. Quite nice, although a tad too salty and roasty black IPA.

330ml bottle. Cloudy dark brown colour with average to huge, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Fruity and bitter hop aroma has notes of grapefruit, passion fruit, citrus, cautious hints of dark chocolate. Taste is bitter hoppy, citrusy, slightly fruity; cautious dry, roasty dark malty undertones; in the disappointing finish unpleasantly flat bitter.

Keg/Cask at William IV Bunny Basher; tried both versions side by side both quality BIPA’s, piney resinous hop balanced with a slight roast malt, the keg held on to head longer, the Keg version was marginally better for me the colder dispense made the hop taste crisper.

On tap at The Cock Tavern, Hackney, Saturday 1st March 2013 This was another winner for me from Brodies, this and the raspberry beer were both truly excellent.Pours black but not so black you could see it peeling away to brown at the edges. This was just a cracking IPA, clean, refreshing, crisp with plenty of citrus zipping through and a little layer of roastiness that really added to this, bitter, clean fruity, but so, so easy to drink for the abv, in fact I can hardly believe its 7.4% Great beer! Dalston Black IPA. Cask at King Willliam IV, Leyton. A durian fruit aroma! Really. The flavour is medium bitter, with fruit, liqourice and spicy notes on the palate. A superb ale.

Bottle at Ales & Tails, Twickenham - 15/12/12. Light black with a mahoooosive frothy tan head. Nose is pine, hops, chocolate, a little mustyness. Taste comprises pine, hops, liqourice, touch of chocolate, light metallic and mineral notes, bitter grapefruit, puff of smoke. Medium bodied with soft carbonation leading to a bitter dry finish. Decent.

Keg, as Black IPA, half-pint, in a very relaxing atmosphere sitting by the open fire place at the excellent King William IV in Leyton. Deep black body topped by a decent, creamy tan-coloured head. Solid artwork to the glass. Semi-tart berries and aniseed fruits to the nose. Flavoured with citrus fruits mixed with malty hints of liquorice, grain and chocolate. Rather too much of bitter tartness towards the ending. Good without being outstanding (Greater London, 24.11.2012).

Tap take over at Mikkeller Bar. Dark brown with a small white head. Fruity aroma with bright and clean citrus along with a touch of licorice. Citrus and licorice also dominate the flavour, with a faint hard roasted finish
