This Imperial Stout borrows from the voluptuary decadence of 18th Century Russia, with its extravagantly smooth blend of crushed coffee beans, cacao nibs and dark malts.
Dig past the infusions of vanilla pods and toasted oak chips and eventually you’ll come face to face with the madness required to make this beer: a kind of depraved logic that would make Rasputin himself proud.
To fully unleash the aromas and bittersweet luxury of this stout we recommend drinking it from a stemmed beer glass before taking a sledgehammer to a Faberge egg.

(bottle, 33cl) Black coloured hue with a brown and small foamy head. Dark and roasted malty aroma with notes of vanilla, coffee, traces of cacao, liquorice and mildly woody accents. Moderately bitter and mildly sweet flavour with a tinge of sourness, full bodied with a velvety mouthfeel. Hearty dark and roasted malty taste with a cornucopia of flavours like chocolate, coffee and liquorice, leading into a velvety flavour-laden and lingering finish. Great. 30.XII.14

From tap at the Hoppy Pub, Thessaloniki, BrewDog Tap Takeover. Black with nice beige brown creamy head. Roasted - burnt malty, chocolate and cocoa, coffee, light spicy and alcohol. Sweet and bitter taste like aroma. Full body, oily to creamy with soft carbonation and bitter aftertaste.

Bottle: Literally black with a creamy and quite stable dark brown head; moderate to solid dryish complex nose: wood, leather, dark malt , chocolate and fruits; solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied and very soft; solid and lingering sweet bitter finish, full of cacao, fruits and tobacco. A deep dark imperial stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, sweet caramel chocolate with smooth coffee grind, nice fruity notes, plums, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a sweet fruity chocolate malt with light peated notes, grassy hops, light molasses and soil, licorice notes, alcohol warmth, very nice and smooth. On tap at Bar Hop.

(Bottle) This is the blackest beer I have seen, and it has the darkest brown head I have ever seen, although this doesn’t hang around long. Lovely aroma - dark chocolate, coffee, dark roast malts. Very full body - thick, creamy and somewhat sticky with velvety carbonation. Taste is rich, dark and fairly complex. The dark chocolate and coffee notes provide a lively bitterness throughout the taste. There’s prunes or dates. Some chocolatey malty sweetness. There’s a nice dry bitterness providing an excellent finish. Very impressive and enjoyable beer.

Poured from 330mL bottle [batch 046 bb 14/02/19]. Jet black with a creamy medium dark brown head. Quite bitter with roast malt and a little chocolate and coffee coming through. Chocolate has a bit of cocoa powder quality to it. Mild dryness and a tinge of alcohol.

Very dark brown color, almost black, beige had. Aroma has huge cocoa, coffee. Taste is boozy chocolate, coffee, licorice.

This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a pure black color. One finger tan foamy head dissipates within about a minute and leaves a nice stringy lacing glazing the sides of the glass.
The smell has a superb roasty to smooth dark chocolate to milk chocolate coated coffee.
The taste tales those previously mentioned flavors to combine subtlety and finely on my tongue. There’s a slight roasty chocolate to coffee aftertaste. The finish is smooth and roasty.
On the palate, this one sits about a medium on the body with a nice sipping quality to it.
Overall, I say this was an absolutely wonderful RIS that I would definitely have again.

Jun ’14. A 0.33 l bottle @Magic Beer Room, Zagreb. It poured pitch black body with a small, full brown head atop. Aroma of cocoa in the first plan, very strong, little bit of roasted malt, herbal notes and only a touch of alcohol. Flavor was lightly bitter from coffee and other heavily roasted malts, but also very well balanced with chocolate and other sweet malt notes. Herbs were not omitted; hops were even more pronounced than in the nose. Medium bodied considering the style with very pleasant and lightly alcoholic finish. Could have a tad more body, although it’s really a pleasant brew. Thumbs down for the extreme retail price only.
