Welcome to the world of Cocoa Psycho, a liquid dimension where pure indulgence reigns.

This Imperial Stout borrows from the voluptuary decadence of 18th Century Russia, with its extravagantly smooth blend of crushed coffee beans, cacao nibs and dark malts.

Dig past the infusions of vanilla pods and toasted oak chips and eventually you’ll come face to face with the madness required to make this beer: a kind of depraved logic that would make Rasputin himself proud.

To fully unleash the aromas and bittersweet luxury of this stout we recommend drinking it from a stemmed beer glass before taking a sledgehammer to a Faberge egg.

Malts: Extra Pale, Wheat, Cara, Smoked, Black and Roasted Barley
Hops: Cascade, Fuggles and Goldings

Bottle at home, probably 4 to 5 years old, 2nd November 18. Pours a black beer, little head. Aroma is liquorice, cocoa, dark chocolate, vanilla, bitter coffee beans. Delicious dry, bitter finish, good impy.

Dark brown bubbly head stayed on a jet black still body. Coffee, stone fruit & demerara aroma. Medium to full bodied, tingly on the palate with a nice clean finish. Espresso, brown sugar, malt & plum tastes to the fore with a lighter back of citrus, grape & hops. My 1000th Ratebeer after 20 months on the site & I thoroughly enjoyed this.

Bottle, bb 12/21. Black with a dark brown head that fades to a cm. Aroma is roasty, toasty and vanilla'd with syrupy mocha. It's smooth but slightly alcohol thinned with the vanilla and mocha just outmatching the beer for a while. But slight spices and burnt notes at the fairly bitter end bring things back under control. After a while the coffee seemed more prominent than the chocolate or vanilla. It seemed a little drier and better defined and I enjoyed it more. It's no Péché Mortel but it's good.

Bottle, 0.33l. Thick black pour, one finger dark brown head. Frothy, medium retention, good lacing. Nose loaded with coffee, cocoa and dark fruits. Medium body, medium carbonation. Regular texture, surprisingly light mouthfeel. Bittersweet taste with decent emphasis on bitterness, nicely roasted. Malty aroma, caramel and roasted malts. Coffee, cappuccino, plum and raisins, slightly smoked. Woody, charred, bitter notes throughout the finish. Slightly dry and boozy. Overall, pretty good IS. Tasty and well balanced but not a world beater.

Draft. Chocolate malt, ash, and hay aroma. Black with small tan head. Moderate sweet chocolate malt, and moderately bitter hay/orange peel flavor. Good body. Extremely smooth - hides its strength incredibly well.

At Le Trappiste, Bruges. Pours cloudy black with a thick, lasting, dark beige head. Intense aroma of milk chocolate, cocoa beans, vanilla, some cream, roasted malt, hops, dried dark fruits. It tastes medium chocolatey sweet and light to medium hoppy bitter with fondant accents; dry, roasted, slightly hoppy finish and warming alcohol of 'creamy jenever'. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Delicious, great in all aspects, even though I had the feeling I was rather chewing than drinking.

Fles geprobeerd met LiekevdV en PatrickvL. Het is een diep zwart bier met een dun bruin schuim. Het heeft een wijnachtige geur. De smaak is gebrand, koffie met cacao in de nasmaak.
