This Imperial Stout borrows from the voluptuary decadence of 18th Century Russia, with its extravagantly smooth blend of crushed coffee beans, cacao nibs and dark malts.
Dig past the infusions of vanilla pods and toasted oak chips and eventually you’ll come face to face with the madness required to make this beer: a kind of depraved logic that would make Rasputin himself proud.
To fully unleash the aromas and bittersweet luxury of this stout we recommend drinking it from a stemmed beer glass before taking a sledgehammer to a Faberge egg.
Malts: Extra Pale, Wheat, Cara, Smoked, Black and Roasted Barley
Hops: Cascade, Fuggles and Goldings

Aged bottle shared with a friend at home, on St. Patrick’s day. Pours opaque black with thick but diminishing creamy brown head. Full body, rich textures, rich mouthfeel, dry bitter finish. Strong roasted malt aromas, coffee and chocolate, vanilla hints, citrus zest, resin, licorice and raisin notes. Very complex, very strong with a significant grainy backbone. Excellent.

Bottle, 0.33l. Pours murky black with thin creamy brown head that disappears quickly. Dominating chocolate and coffee in the aroma, some alcohol and wood present, too. Taste starts with mild fruity freshness that gets quickly overpowered by sweet deeply roasted malt, bitter chocolate and licorice. Mouthfeel is warming with alcohol well hidden, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Aged for 2 years, apparently worked good with this brew...

Bottle. Aroma: burnt malt, resin, woody, coffee. Taste: burnt malt, coffee, oak. Aftertaste: tart, a bitterness of burnt malt and hops. Very good!

Shared bottle (large sample) on 5th Feb 2016 at the 4th International Beer Swap in De Bierboom, Brugge. Poured black, wispy brown head. Aroma of roasted/toasted malts and chocolate along with traces of coffee and vanilla. The taste was similar but with some added liquorice that didn’t appear up my nose. The chocolate did try to dominate the taste along with the coffee, but there was so much going on they balanced each other out and blended nicely with the other complex flavours. Liked it, the alcohol level seemed well hidden too.

Black body, with a medium, dense, creamy, dark coffee-colored head.
Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice, some soy sauce, some tobacco, some dark fruits.
Tastes of coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, wood, liquorice, cocoa powder, soy sauce, some vanilla, subtle booze.
Medium, creamy mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes roasty-bitter, dry, wooden, a bit warm, with tobacco, liquorice, coffee, cocoa, slight vanilla.
Very nice, but not outstanding in my opinion. Full and well balanced, with interesting, strong dark notes, but not very complex maybe. Alcohol is well hidden. Overall I’ve had better style example, while it’s still an enjoyable beer I would drink again.

Pitch black pour, very thick-looking. Velvety head, dark brown, with nice retention - it looks perfect, for a RIS. Smells of cocoa and dark chocolate, roasted malts and a bit of bourbon. The taste follows the same notes, but overall is a bit mellow - there isn’t anything that stands out, not bitterness, not sweetness, not even alcohol.
