Old Peculier is a beautiful, yet very simple beer, brewed using a very generous blend of finest pale, crystal and roasted barley with two bitter hops combined with the majestic and noble ‘Fuggle’ hop to produce a beer of awesome full-bodied flavour with subtle cherry and rich fruit overtones.

"The Legend" is right, heard about this old ale for some time before being able to try it, was shocked and amazed to see it at the local package store. Chilled briefly before pouring into a pint glass. Large off white head that I had to wait to finish the pour. Color is a immediately a viscous dark brown, but amber and purple color can be seen when shown in light. Aroma is of dark fruit, chocolate, rum and sherry, taste is the same with some cookie added by the malt. As good as advertised, glad to finally give it a go.

Whole Foods Market, DC sixer ($11): Pours a doppelbock-like color, sort of dark brownish red, with a tannish head that doesn’t stick around for all that long of a time. Aroma is heavily slanted in the direction of the sugary malts, but there are a few fruit notes in there as well I think. Taste is sweet. Body is medium heavy. Not sticky like you might expect. Some nuttiness in there as well. Thick, but I think that it is actually somewhat sessionable.

500mL bottle, pours dark reddish brown with a beige head. Aroma of caramel malt, dried dark fruits and light spices. Flavour is more bitter than the nose suggests, with bitter English malts and ESB-like hops on the finish. Decent.

Bottle. Pours cloudy, brown with mild red highlights and a strong, beige head. Malty aroma, with raisins, plums, light chocolate and roast. Quite sweet, malty, more ripe, dark fruit, some nice alcohol. Medium to full in body with average carbonation and light alcohol warmth. Finishes sweet and malty with some fruity notes. Great stuff.

500ml bottle. Pours really dark ruby brown with no head. Aroma is fruity malt, some sour apple as well. Some berries to start and banana and apples in the finish. Slightly sour, dry finish.

500ml bottle, 12C - got better as it warmed. Dark brown, light tan head. Aroma: toast, nuts, light red wine, dried bananas. Mild initial bitterness gives way to berries and toasted malt. Seems quite light bodied for its rich flavours. Long, complex and difficult to describe dry finish has berries, chocolate, nuts coffee sourness and hop bitterness. A good beer with a great finish. I hadn’t seen this for a long time in Australia and am slightly relieved to find that it was worth missing.

Long awaited!Pours black with ruby/copper highlights. Large creamy head leaving lovely lacing.Very sweet aroma, with loads of toffee, caramel, cookie-dough, treacle and raisins. Very complex!Flavours are just as impressive with heaps of caramel, cookie-dough, raisins and nutty notes. After this initial burst it does fall flat during which a mild bitterness shows up, but then more of thos raisins and caramel surface up to linger on during the finish.Carbontion seems high and exacerbates that lack in the mid-section.

330 ml bottle. Dark reddish body, almost black, with a moderate beige head. Very nice aroma, malt, dry fruit, some caramel, liquorices and some roast. Flavor is sweet, slightly burnt malt with some fruit and caramel. Fine body and all in all quite enjoyable.

Dark brown, almost black, with almost no head. Rich malt aroma. Wow. Strong hops, good malt aftertaste, but very hoppy and carbonated on front. Very thin body, almost like a lager. Just goes right down, but in a surprising, not disappointing way. The malt and body all come afterwards. Maybe that’s why its called “Peculiar!” The body is nothing like what you expect, but it is refreshing and good. Subtle. The more I drink it, the less I think I like it. First sip was fantastic, though.
