Brewing with fresh hops is a big endeavor, requiring four to five times the hop volume compared to using pelletized hops. Although the process is complex, it brings impressive results: Fresh Hop is an American-style pale ale with moderate hop bitterness marked by a unique and intensely grassy hop flavor and aroma. Fresh Hop is a superbly refreshing, medium bodied, light-copper colored pale ale weighing in at 55 IBUs and 6.1% ABV.

22oz bottle dates 9/22/2009. Pours a totally transparent, bright orange with a thin, lightly lacing white head. Aroma of oranges, lemon rind, a little candy, grapefruit. Flavor is vegetal, dried pine cones, a little cracker. This has faded, especially in the flavor over 8 months.

22oz Bottle Pours a slightly hazy light orange/amber., Modest sized but dense and lasting sandy colored head. Full grassy hop aroma and some light woody malts. A little bit of leather. Not the bright citrusy hop flavor, more of a green and grassy. Pleasant though and mildly bitter. Nice bitter trailer and a smooth palate. A touch heavy for a Pale but it works and feels good. Nothing jumps out spectacular, just all around good. I am thinking that I am glad I still have 18 or so ounces to go on this little beauty.

Tap at Pony Bar. Pours a medium amber with a moderate white head. Big hop nose, lots of grass and florals. First flavor is honey and brown sugar, then more bitterness from the hops. Has a nice, bitter bite to it. Really nice.

Bottle from Melger’s Wijn-en Drankenhandel, Haarlem. Drunk for breakfast on the ferry back to North Shields. This was a good way to start the day. Poured a slightly hazy amber colour with a medium sized foamy off white head. Plenty of piney hop in the nose with some citrus and galia melon in there too. Flavour had more of the same very tasty hoppage with a solid caramel malt spine and grapefruit notes. Great hop linger in the finish. Straightforward and tasty. Yep this is pretty freshhhhhhhhhh stuff.

9th October 2008. On tap at the brewery bar. Clear amber beer. Hoppy but not overwhelming. Semi dry finish. Crisp.

Strawberry and pineapple nose. Shimmering amber with nice streams of carbonation, medium white head, nice lacing. Excellent strawberry and rose hip initial punch, swiftly turning to grapefruit peel and ending grassier but equally as bitter. Fantastic transitions. Alcohol is unnoticeable, but the body is there. This is better than most IPAs, and really too hoppy to be considered an APA. Rated conservatively.

Bottled. Clear golden, small head. Perfumy overt citric hop aroma. Dry and salty, fairly light bodiedwith clean, rounded mouthfeel. Floral minerally citric hops takes it all the way to the salty, bitter finish, Fresh and pleasant, retaining balance despite the hoppiness.

Bottle at The Rake. It has got hopo, but a little ash. Not huge hop though. Good. 837315 3.6/5. Sometimes, you get things so wrong. My previous review of this is rather remiss. Clear amber colour, thin off white head. Sherberty fresh hop aroma, highish acid level on the aroma too. Pale ale in mouth with some pale malts, ok fullness. Then on finish lots of sherbert and tasty hop, some ok bitterness, but the fresh hop is really quite remarkable. Normally you would think this would be out of balance, but it actually works pretty well. Love the hop sting without it being completely too bitter. Really good.
