Three Notch'd Brewing Company Killer Angel

Killer Angel

Three Notch'd Brewing Company in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States 🇺🇸

IPA - Imperial / Double Regular
Score
7.12
ABV: 8.7% IBU: 87 Ticks: 10
Eight hop varieties, eight hop additions. In order of appearance: Warrior, Summit, Simcoe, Willamette, Cascade, and Falconer’s Flight in the boil, then two separate dry hop additions of Centennial then Citra.

Don’t be afraid of this killer, though, because it’s still angelic: very smooth, balanced, and quite quaffable.

Canned. Brownish super clear orange pour with significant head. Can taste the citrus and such but strong malty presence, pine resin. Enjoyable, not every beer these days has to be a milky juicepocalypse.

Can from Wine Warehouse. Pours amber with a soft beige head. Something smells off here - there's a hint of spoiled milk in the aroma mixed in with citrus. I'm going to let this sit for a few minutes to see if it dissipates. OK - the aroma goes away for the most part and brings pine and green pepper in its place. I think the can is infected. It has a very piney, resiny flavor, caramel too, but also something slightly off - some plastic that just shouldn't be there. Canned 12/27/17 and sampling on 12/31/17, so it's not old...

Crisp, light amber and copper coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of fresh grassy and biting piney hops along with a good caramel malt backbone. Full-bodied; Strong citrus and piney hop flavours at first with a good apple and fruit sweetness along with some caramel and crisp herbal notes and a bit of sweetness. Aftertaste shows a well-rounded flavour, starting with some pleasant malt up front along with a good herbal and grassy hop character, all finished with a nice sweetness of apples, pears and citrus. Overall, a well-balanced, not overly hoppy nor showing alcohol of any sort, Imperial IPA. Nice to sample and well worth trying if you can find it and especially if you like this style or a plain IPA. I sampled this thirty-two ounce growler fill from a few hours ago at Whole Foods in Fair Lakes, Virginia on 16-February-2016 for US$5,00 sampled later in the evening at home in Washington on 16-February-2016.

Draft at the brewery, and then at Sedona, and then again at the brewery. Pours a hazy pale amber color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Fair head retention. Aroma of citrus, tropical and mild pine hops with big toffee malts. The taste is pine, resin, citrus, tropical hops, some candied citrus and caramel malts. Medium bodied, well balanced, mild lingering bitterness, mild booze. Nice beer.
