Our Raison D'Etre, with a little extra. This immodest brew, made with an obscene amount of malt, brown sugar and raisins, takes Belgian-style browns to new heights.

Raison D'Extra's little brother Raison D'Etre was brewed to be the ultimate beer partner for steak. Plump raisins and beet sugars give the beer a similar DNA and color to red wine.

D'Extra takes this concept to the next level. What 120 Minute IPA is to 60 Minute IPA, D'Extra is the D'Etre. We're pushing the limits of what a Belgian yeast can do (and we've discovered that's somewhere in the ballpark of 15% to 18% ABV!)

D'Extra is extremely complex and a great candidate for aging. Sip on one with a loved one now, and stash a few in your beer cellar! As Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione says, "This puppy's only getting better with age."

From bottle @ EBF 2008. Loads of pineapple and red berries, malt and grapefruit in the aroma. Sugary, malty sweet flavor. Alcoholic, of course. Oily hops. Pineapple. Liquorish. Too much of the good things.

Super booze bomb like a Molotov cocktail. Pours hazy maroon with ok head. Florals and much more caramel. Sweet boozy end. Not my picnic. Raisins and brown sugar. Tap at brewery.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Dark fruits, raisin, alcohol, malt, brown sugar. Intense stuff. It was better than I thought it would be.

A purchase several weeks ago at The Cellar in Odessa, I recall Dogfish Head is rather proud of this product, price-wise. Let us see the justification. I open the 12 oz bottle (born on date of 1/11/19) before lifting into my Cowtown snifter. The liquid is a dark, walnut brown topped by a thinnish, light tan rim around the glass, low carbonation apparently. I find the scent inviting, dark fruit and all, raisin for sure, something from the field. And the drink, hmm, pretty damn fine. very Belgian dark ale tasting for an American ale. Black plum, sorghum, a bit of bakers chocolate, a hint of raspberry jam. A thick burn as it goes down, no abv shown on the label. Dogfish's website is noncommital, puts it in the 15-18% range. Whatever. Potent.

Hazy brown color with thin tan head. Malty and alcohol aroma. Flavor is alcohol and sweetness, raisin or prune, with an alcohol burn at the finish.

Many thanks to kappldav123 for sharing this bottle! Deep intense raisins and dry sticky malt in the nose. The beer starts extremely deep but also alcoholic. Sharp burning alcohol over a thick and rich dark body. Nice oxidation together with a deep and dry raisin roasted malty ending. Moderate bitter, intense chocolate cake, fruity raisins, alcohol. Nice one!
